2021 Tacoma need clean sweep?

I know the head unit on the 2021 Tacoma is a bit different than before. Do you guys know if it needs a unit like JL Cleansweep or JL Audiofixit 82 prior to speaker/sub installation?

 

Depends, These are the results of a 2018 headunits output.

If the 2021 has the same or similar output then you probably dont really need it, but its nice to be able to adjust levels and eq based on your own tastes.
I run a aftermarket headunit with a flat output, but I still run it through a audio control dsp to adjust levels for the trucks acoustics.

Let me ask you a couple more questions if you don't mind.

Let's say I go without a clean sweep. If I were to keep the stock headunit, get 2 front component speakers and a 8/10 inch subwoofer unit how would I wire them up given I would get the power lines run from the battery to the drivers seat. My question is more in the lines of what wiring kit or harness would allow me to connect the 2021 stock head unit to a 2 and 1 or 3 channel amp. Sub outputs?


I thought this job would consist of a pair of component speakers, a two channel amp, a single channel amp and a sub in a pre made box. I would appreciate the suggestions on type of connectors, wires or amp wiring kits.

 

Im not 100% sure on what plugs the new 2021 systems use so I cant recommend adapter for that.

But you will need to make a "t-harness". This will take the speaker leads from the factory headunit and route them under your drivers seat to the amps inputs. Then it will route them back from the amp to the plug that normally is plugged into the headunit.

These harnesses are designed to take signal from the headunit and send it back to the factory harness to send out to the speakers.

As for hooking up the speakers it all depends on what you get. If you get the focal OEM design set, then you just plug them in. If you get a aftermarket set that has crossovers then you will need to get adapters for the factory tweeter plugs so you can put in the crossovers.

The OEM speakers go like this
Headunit -> dash tweeters -> door woofers.

The OEM JBL system go like this
Headunit -> OEM amp -> each speaker gets its own wires

You want it to go
Headunit -> amp -> crossover <= tweeters and woofers


Something else you should keep in mind is if you have the JBL system or not. It gets much more complicated if you have the JBL system.
You can tell if you have the JBL system because the headunit says JBL on it, there is a subwoofer behind the passenger rear seat, and the doors speaker grills will say JBL.

 

I don't have the JBL unit. So Hu-->amp-->crossover<--woofer+tweeter . I guess I don't get to use factory speaker harness at all, it seems like it will be more of a headache.

And I need to find a T harness+connector that will split the stock HU outputs.

 

The t-harness allows you to use the factory harness. It just extends it to where it needs to be for the amp.

 

Yeah but you said the other end goes to the tweeter --> woofer I want it to go to the crossover. Do I just unplug the tweeter, run the wire to crossover than re wire the tweeter to the crossover?

 

So the factory tweeter have 4 wires going to them. 2 of the wires come from the headunit and provide the sound to the tweeters, then the other 2 wires go out to the door speakers.

Basically you will get the adapter, it will give you 2 wires that go to the input of your crossover, then the other 2 wires will go to the woofers output (on the crossover). Then you provide your own 2 wires for the tweeter.

I have been looking for the T split harness but I am having a hard time locating one for a 2021 Tacoma.

 

Verify if this is or is not what the back of your stereo looks like.

Green connector is missing, white connector seems to be relocated to left, the same PCB as the little blue and grey connectors

 

The black connector is all of your speaker outs. You’ll need a male/female pair of that to run a T harness. You may also need a male/female pair of the long white connector on the left in that group of 3 to get a remote turn on.

IMO you don’t need clean sweep, just something that will give you more EQ than the factory stereo that accepts high level inputs.

 

Any update on this? I’m looking to add a 4 channel amp to my Taco and wonder if you’d found a suitable harness?
