Interesting. So the truck got put up for auction in the mid 2000s after someone put almost 200K on it. So this gates timing belt is this motors second belt in ~300K miles.

Yeaah. Old stuff has that problem. Are there any MB specific vendors? The british cars have a few like moss and victoria british that are pretty handy. Or are you just stuck with ebay?

Any reason for a 2RZ? I guess it's a reliability improvement over stock and you aren't building a race car.
Makes those guys that brag about having 300K+ on the original belt sound sort of silly.

pelican parts. but what they have is super limited. it seems engine parts have all but dried up.. im seriously torn on what to do.. a toyota 4cylinder would be easy, a lexus v8 has been proven to fit, but more work.. or a more modern mercedes 4 cylinder is also apparently not terrible to do

2rz power isnt a whole lot more than the stock engine. i dont want to overwhelm the axle since its a funky swing axle it isnt easily changed to anything else.

plus im not building a race car. i want a cruiser.. the power train may be modern, but it will stay powersteering-less and all the interior will be factory as can be..

i do think if a engine swap is happening, the car is going manual trans. to much work to make the modern autos play nicely and i also want to hopefully keep the speedo working correctly.. which means finding a way to make the speedo cable work and read properly

There was that one guy who put a harbor freight predator engine in a dakota. Don't do that.

My vote would be a 2rz, or the MB 4 cylinder if you're looking for more technical challenge.

a 22r has also crossed my mind because i can run twin down drafts and at least make it look period correct.

@Empty_Lord I should be good to just pull the tensioner/timing belt off then take the cam pulleys off as normal. Then align everything back on resassembly.
