RSi SmartCap (Photo Heavy)

The company that RSI contracted to make the third brake light harnesses never delivered. So you've got two options; the first, RSI will arrange and pay for the third brake light to be professionally installed at a conveniently located shop. The second option is remove your tail light, take the positive wire from the harness and splice it into your brake light wire (typically the blue wire) and then ground the negative. The second option takes minutes but not everyone wants to mess with wiring, so you've also got option one.

I too did not receive the wire harnesses with my cap. When I reached out to customer service at RSi they put me on list and will send out the new harness when they get the situation resolved. Here is the email.

Unfortunately they told me I'll have to work through RSI directly, or through Offroad Alliance. I've called the number I was given for RSI asking for info but haven't heard back yet. I want to make sure that if I do have a shop install the wiring, that RSI will indeed cover the cost.

 

So far we've had one or two people do the professional install. RSI will arrange and pay for the installation at a shop as conveniently located as possible. It will be covered, no worries there. Again, most folks are just installing it themselves and tapping into the brake light as that's a fairly simple install.

We still do not have a good ETA for the actual plug and play harnesses from RSI. Could be awhile.

 

This is what I did as quick fix until RSI supplies the harnesses.
Plug neg/pos into what comes with the cap which has the fuse inline.


Use a Posi-tap to tie into the blue wire on brake light bulb.


Ground it.

I just tapped the brake light with a t-tap. Works perfectly. I hope you find a solution that works for you.

 

I ended up tapping the wire, and it’s working. I’m simply not well versed enough in electrical work to “enjoy” messing with the factory wiring. I’ve tied everything else I’ve wired into a switchpro and a ground bus so I know to blame myself if issues pop up with those jobs.

sp9100 and 4 KC cyclone lights. Need a few more magnets and zip ties to make it look better. I ended up shorting myself on wire on the passenger side so not it’s uneven...it’s going to drive me crazy until I couple in a length of wire.

 

So I have an awning I’d like to attach directly to the rails but haven’t been able to figure out what hardware to use. Would love some input.

where did you get the side stickers that blockout factory RSI branding?

 

To be clear, they don't "block" the RSI logo. I had to remove the vinyl sticker that said RSI on it first. The 2 larger black stickers toward the front of the cap were there from the manufacturer and I didn't remove them. The greyscale decals I put on the back are from @Tacovinyl - they're what he calls "4 wave" stickers on his website of the same name.
I've been thinking of looking in to having one of the guys from this forum print a straight black RSI logo or do something more creative (and less annoying) than the red and white "RSI Smartcap", but the time and effort required just isn't there for me yet.

 

Oh I see I thought the RSI branding was painted or silkscreened on, as I’ve only seen one cap in person and it didn’t look like a vinyl sticker.

Got a chance to test how dust-proof the RSI is over 4 days of pheasant hunting in SD - the topper did a really nice job, and being able to open the side panels to access the coolers was a huge benefit!

 

Has anyone looked at limiting the windoors from opening so far? I have an awning I want to mount but want to keep it as long profile as possible but the windoors open above the rails

 

These look great, but they don't seem to fit the style of the truck at all. I know that is subjective. Also, why do we not see other companies making a steel top (or is this aluminum)? Just wondering...

 

@speed_of_a_human like all things beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As far as construction materials, it’s stainless steel, and I can’t answer why or why not there aren’t more manufacturers using it. RSi claims astounding load ratings, I’m assuming due to the shape and material. Maybe someone else could answer your questions better though.

 

I've been visiting the RSI website and there are no photos of the long bed (6') version, which is the one I'd need. In reading these posts from the guys with the long beds, it appears RSI just uses the same side windoors as the short bed. Super bummer because it changes the proportions and the look in my opinion, and you don't get as much side access as I imagined. I am really grateful you guys shared those photos.

 

Love my stainless steel RLD canopy. RSI wasn’t the first nor the only company that makes steel canopies. Fiberglass has just been the norm state side mainly because they are cheap and easy to manufacture but I think you will be seeing more and more steel caps as people realize all the benefits they have over a typical fiberglass canopy.
