Are there any ratchet straps that don't suck?

I'm looking for some 1" ratchet straps. Every one that I have ever used is ok at best. If I said price didn't matter, is there a product that you would say works great?

Never found one that narrow to work very well and then only for pretty light loads.

 

Every ratchet strap I've bought no matter the brand does exactly what it's supposed to..

what about them "sucks"?

NRS straps...not ratchet but cam. Back them up with a simple knot on the unloaded side.

JACO brand are very good. More expensive than local big box stores but way better quality. Of course keep in mind a 1" strap is still only a 1" strap...

 

You're right they all do generally work but I have nothing else to complain about so here I am

Build quality is not great and they wear out faster than I would like. I have a certain love for high quality tools even when they are just a simple screw driver or wire stripper. Im hoping that somewhere out there is an "orange vice" of ratchet straps.

 

Do you know what a "block and tackle" is? I like that ratchet straps have additional leverage but maybe using 2 cams could work.

 

At 2:30 is usually where I have issues. Over time they start to jam and just don't want to fully extend.

 

I do, I think of it more as a function of rope, not straps. Especially when you’re already getting a mech. advantage from the ratchet function.

 

Consider 1.5" to 2" straps. Price is relevant to quality IMO. I've had cheap 1" straps fail. I only use 'em for light stuff at best.
OTOH I had a set of 1" Ancra cam straps in the 80s used to haul my ATV. Thick & strong, 'til my boy used one to recover a friends truck form a ditch...

When my other straps wear out I replace them with these, but honestly I rarely use my old straps any more.

The original pair of these I bought are still going strong (I have 6 of these total now)

So nice not have a bunch of excess strap flopping around.

 

I vote NRS type straps as well. I have newer ones and some that are twenty years old. I use them all the time for straping down things. Ive even sacrificed a few to certain circumstances like pulling a car out of ditch (yes the car was smaller but it worked). They aren't as expensive as those hooks you posted.. they are pretty cheap for how long they last. Ive never had one of the cams fail. You can tell they are made well. Some of the off brands are cheap but us whitewater enthusiasts would never go there. They also sell a 2" version for a super beefy tie down.

 

I know what a block and tackle is. Why would you want some like that with a 1" strap. These nrs straps are also much thicker than any 1" ratchet strap that ive seen. You can really crank down on the NRS strap and cam. So much so ive seen someone break their whitewater kayak with one. This was a boat you could pound on rocks going down a river or over a 50' or higher waterfall broken by to 10 dollar strap. If you need more leverage hold the 'tail taut then put your foot between the cam and your hand (end /tail of strap) to be able to put your full weight on it. I understand this might be hard on top of a truck or something.

Pro-Tapers, motorcyclists love them. Decent cheap-o's were Ancra.

We use 1" straps to lift 2K pounds if well made, certified straps tagged and rated for it.

 

Ok. I like straps. But frankly rope is pretty good. Specifically a kern mantle. I accept the forthcoming abuse with humility...

 

I'm with you there too. With the right kind of rope/cordage you can do anything especially if you know the correct knots. Bowline and truckers hitch is all you really need to know for tie downs.

I've set up what we call "z-drags' in the whitewater community to pull boats /people out of bad situations. Most people don't realize how powerful water can be

Most people can barely tie an overhand let alone a square knot.

"If you cant tie a knot, tie alot" is what most subscribe to.... hahaha

 

I just replaced my 15 year old walmart specials with a set of rhino brand straps. I'm impressed with the rhinos.

I'm not sure what your application is, but if you find any 1" strap that "sucks," either you need a different tool for the job or you need training on how to use ratchets. No shame in that, as simple as they are, they aren't exactly the most intuitive things to pick up. Can't tell you how many times I've seen someone try to use the ratchet to take up slack in the line, for example. But I have never found a sucky strap, with exception to the occasional damaged strap.

 

I bought a couple of cheapo 1" ratchet straps to compress a small tubeless tire, in order to re-inflate it. Worked perfect!
I've since bought a better pair, since I now see the value of them.
