I posted this in the audio forum but no response as yet.
Just bought an '03 Xtra Cab and want to improve the sound.

Recommendations for a sub-$1k upgrade. Help spend my money!

Emphasis on quality not quantity of sound.
I have an Infinity powered sub I can put in back so looking for speakers, amp and low bling HU.

    TIA

Just upgrading the HU will make a huge improvement.

HU - Pioneer & Kenwood are my favorites. Stay far away from Sony Asplode
    Speakers - Kenwood & Kicker

x2 on the HU. I was planning on an entire system but the HU alone (JVC Arsenal KDA-815) made such an improvement that I just left it at that.

Thanks. Looks and sounds great. Its big but basically one big knob and you can turn off all the lights. I like that- especially at night.

What speakers? I have about $700 left in my self-imposed budget.

I would think you would want your sub to take up as little space as necessary but still be able to pound.

    I got a x-tra cab '03 also

Do a 8" sub one or two, two requires more space. Look at Sundown's SA-8, Or DC Audio Lvl 2 8". Just type those models on youtube, vids will do the talking.

SA8... So they got 150.2 DB
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoxfFsid3qs&feature=related

How loud is 150DB for us regular people?

    Sandblasting, Loud Rock Concert 115dB
    Pain begins 125dB
    Pneumatic riveter at 4' 125dB
Loudest recommended exposure WITH hearing protection 140dB
Jet engine at 100', Gun Blast 140dB
    Death of hearing tissue 180dB
    Loudest sound possible 194dB

Louder than a jet engine blasting standing 100ft away. The sundown SA8 is less than $150. You'll have enough for a better amp.

ALPINE equipment all the way. That being said, the factory speakers (in my truck anyway) are more than enough sound with good clarity for me after upgrading the head unit. I went with the Alpine iDA-X305S digital media receiver because i only keep my music on my iPod or phone. Also, the iPhone pandora app plays through the unit pretty sweet. I also installed my sub/amp and love the system. Speakers will improve your system too but after the new head unit and sub and amp, I am more than satisfied with the sound and opted to spend the extra money on new billsteins.

Any suggestions on a good x-cab space saving sub?

The kid I bought mine from molested the radio speakers and interior.

i'm running a 10" truck box with a rockford fosgate sub. shallow mount subs are super expensive so I went with my fosgate because it had a rubber ring wrapped around the magnet, which when removed (just pulled it off) the sub fits in a truck box (just barely, depth wise). bumps pretty good and cost less than 1/3 of the shallow mounts i was looking at.
