I totally agree with your argument; converting your truck back to stock would be as much hassle as just putting 4x4 in. Just sucks that no one is going to want to swap with you xD

It's pretty staightforward. There's a bunch of us now that have done the swap. @Brian422

This isn't necessary. Just take your driveshaft and have it modified at a driveline shop. I paid like $100 for this.

    This

exactly. I would say this is a moderate difficulty job. Everything is a bolt for bolt swap in regards to the transmission. Then you’re adding a transfer case shorter drive shaft or putting in a 4wd drive shaft (if you can find one cheap this was cheaper for me as the driveline shops in our area wanted just as much as a used ds to shorten mine). The front is the fastest part. Everything just fits there’s no real wrong way of putting it in if you’re paying attention. Depending on you’re mileage it’s probably cheaper to do this swap than it is to strip down and buy a 4wd depending on how you value your time and your attachment to your current truck. Like I said in pm you can get this swap done for less than 2500 as long as you take your time sourcing parts. After reselling my stock pre runner trans, stock ds, stock hubs(pretty much have those away) and a few other odds and ends I think my spreadsheet had me sub 2300.00 and that included new gears (35’s)

This is nonsense. A 4wd swap is mostly bolt-on (about 90%). A full SAS is 90% custom fabrication and a shit load more expensive. I did my 4wd swap in a weekend by myself and only spend about $1800 (could have done it cheaper, but I had issues with the CV axles I bought).

May he find new meaning wherever he is.

And @Dex__43 what axle are you looking at? I hope you're considering a Dana 44. They're my fav in our size lol

But we want him to do a full SAS with a Dana 44. That still supports the 4x conversion. Can't we just have what we want?

Haha. I'd like to see it too. Maybe with a Dana 60 though.

Let's be reasonable, now. If we do one up front, we need one in back too. And since rear-steer is pretty common on D60s, that's a no brainer. I know a cage guy too and we can powdercoat at the place that does airplane parts. I think an LS swap would be cake in a 2nd gen.

...I guess he's building a rock buggy now. He'll have to graduate to Pirate4x4 at that point.

Probably easier to trade it in and buy a rock bouncer from the rock bouncer dealer. Probably cheaper too.

If you want rear steer you might as well go with Pettibone axles.

D60s? What a mistake. Mog portal axles or you're not even really trying

Its not bad, Just time consuming. Like joe said, its straight forward. If your not doing gears or anything like that it can be done for a pretty good price if you buy your parts at the right places. Took me like a month only working on weekends mostly by myself. But i lived about 45 min away from were i was doing the swap. I bet you could do it in half that time working on it in your garge at home.

Go look at my informational guide next to my build link. It should help a ton.
