What about a thief with a 9V battery connected to a probe?

Or a purpose-built mirror connector tied to a battery?

One possibility not mentioned yet is using a smart plug for power to the opener itself. Then you can have power scheduled off every night and still easily turn it back on when needed for after hours use.

I have a Liftmaster Door Opener which has an App called 'My Q' which allows you to open and close the door from an App on your phone and allows you to set alerts for when the door opens and closes. I've had mine 2.5 years now but I think the newer versions also include a camera so you can see who's coming and going. In my case I live alone so if I ever get an alert and I didn't open or close the door (which has never happened so far) I know I need to find-out why. I believe they sell the 'My Q' thing as an add-on for existing garage door openers as well.

All that being said I only use the App from my phone (or the hidden opener in my garage) to open and close my Door. Since I don't park my Taco in my garage I don't see the need to set-up Homelink.

Yep, I have MyQ set up as well. And I even have a door/window switch mounted to my garage door as well. MyQ only notifies you if the door is opened via the motor. The door/window switch will tell me if someone forces their way in.

I like having homelink set up though. It allows me to press and release the button rather than hold it down like a normal opener. And it tells me which direction the door is moving (more of a novelty but still nice).

Might you supply a bit more detail on your specific solution for this?

I had 888LM's and the 828 internet gateway and they are all on the shelf after 2 failures as I've gone back to 78LM old school wall panels (no failures since) and an 850 for solid extended range. Would be nice to have a completely independent check on door status (especially since I have two singles).

Oh, and my garage door switches (with illumination tap too) which were about the same total price as homelink but significantly more labor time :)

Samsung SmartThings and a compatible switch is what I use to monitor.

How is the color match on those aftermarket buttons?

In the overhead console? I got AOB new blue just like my 2low switch. Only "imperfection" is it doesn't flicker like the remote LED's do when pressed. However, since I have an 850LM which has massive range I don't really need to worry about holding down the button to make sure it registered a click, one press and it's golden.

So for garage door detection, something like this is what you use? Any chance you have a photo of how you've mounted it?

There's a chamberlain option too which I've looked at before but seems like a bit more cost and time to get off the ground.

That sensor will require you to have a smart hub (SmartThings hub, or a different one that is compatible with the sensor).
I mounted the magnet side to the door by drilling holes and used nuts and bolts. It's an old door that's not insulated so I could access the back side. I also used screws to mount the sensor itself to the wall. I'm in the south so the garage can get pretty toasty in the summer, didn't trust the adhesive.

Regarding the MyQ product you referenced, that will only open and close your door when the signal is received. I don't know if you'll get any notification of the door opening or closing. My garage door opener is made by Chamberlain, the functionality (MyQ) was already baked in.

Big thank you to Bob's Automotive Mirrors & More. I installed the Gentex GENK45AMB5 rearview mirror years ago in my 2016 Tacoma, so I could have a rearview mirror with HomeLink. As concerns about auto thief and break-ins have risen, so has my worry that the constant power to the rearview mirror left my valuables in the garage a sitting duck for an easy snag. Recently, I ordered the harness Bob sells (part number 600001-STD) for $24.99 to resolve this issue and I could not be happier. It is plug-in-play and was a snap to install.

Remove the mirror and plastic wire channel and simply connect everything and then feed the harness connector and extra wiring up into the headliner. You have to be careful when you do it to not thrash the headliner and structured backing, but there is enough space to make everything tuck in nicely. Then just put the mirror back on the window bracket and the wiring goes in the plastic channel as it originally did. Be sure thread back and tighten the Torx retainer screw for the rearview mirror. Took 15 minutes and I went slow.

I have been using one of Bob's mirrors for my 2018 Sport and it has worked flawless since the day I got it. We have the homelink buttons that came standard on my Wife's Limited 4Runner and our old 99 4Runner has the overhead console sun glass looking holder compartment where you put an opener in the console and push the door to open the garage. We never leave our vehicles outside so its never a problem but I think I will order this harness from Bob on Monday.

Quite a few security risks are via modern conveniences.
If you’re worried about this, where is your registration? Thief breaks into your truck, now he has your address.

Routinely assess your security risks and deal with those weaknesses.

i can't say across all vehicles, but my gentex v4 camera mirror i purchased from bob's for my '18 has operated that way, as did my previous gentex v4 homelink-only mirror i upgraded my previous ranger to as well.

personally, i liked the always-on functionality--it allowed me to leave the trucks out in the yard, close up the garage, and do outside projects, while opening/closing the garage without needing the door code, or my keys to turn the vehicle on.

but i also have a detached garage, so risk of someone getting access is lesser than if the garage provided access to the house.

though i will say i won't waste time going anywhere else anymore for mirror stuff. my ranger, i hadn't found BAMM's site yet, so did all my own research, which was almost 2 months of work.

i found BAMM when i started looking to migrate my tacoma's camera display away from the radio and into the mirror, he was extremely easy and reasonable to work with. the entire email chain from beginning-to-order was all of a few days. he had everything in stock, and knew every answer to every question i had, which is far and above most places anymore!

    Hey everyone,

FYI. Don't forget that there are the seat sensors for weight which you sit on that makes the truck thinks you are in it. If you are outside of the truck, then the truck is armed as long as the truck is off and locked.

I don't know if seat sensors should work with homelink... I have no idea since I don't have homelink in my truck. I have seat sensors in mine though which tells me to put seatbelt on. All I have is auto dim button and sensor on the mirror including the light status for being on or off.

That's why if you are in the seat, then the truck is not actually armed unless you get out of the truck.

@RJP869 I don't have homelink in mine but you have any mirrors that have them including other features that I have on my current mirror?

I’ve had my mirror from him for probably 4+ years. I guess I’m mostly ‘curious’ since the truck lives in the garage 360+ days of the year. On rare nights where it has to stay out, I make sure to lock the interior garage door. While the adapter is a cool solution, it may be a solution to a problem I really don’t have.

I'm not sure, but @RJP869 should be able to clarify which harness would change your 2018 Tacoma homelink to ignition on power.
