What caliber, and what grain bullet?

 

For me 5.56.

62gr Federal Fusion. I limit myself to 150 meters for whitetail.

 

In my case, 6.5 Grendel and 123 grain Hornady SST @ 2550 fps

 

You like that Grendel? If I do another build I like to do a Grendel.

 

I love it. I took a 100 pound doe at 100 yards with it back in January, DRT with a heart shot. Gelatinized the upper lungs and heart.

It would be fun to hunt with but I’d have to get an AR10 or something you have to use .23 caliber or larger in Va

 

You can use a 450 Bushmaster, 458 Socom, or 350 Legend in a standard sized ar15.

EDIT: Also 6.5 grendel is a .264 diameter bullet.

 

This. That's why I assembled my 6.5 Grendel. It's legal to hunt in every state except the one with the straight wall cartridge restriction.

Not a huge fan of 300blk unless it’s an 8” barrel, with subs and a suppressor.

Always wanted to know how an AR would fair hunting deer. Been thinking of using mine, but I'll probably stick with my old 300 Savage.

 

I can vouch for 6.5 Grendel and .300 AAC, personally. I have friends who hunt with 6.8 SPC to equal effect. Most people I know use AR15s in varying calibers for deer and under, .30 caliber bolt guns for deer and up. I have a buddy that shoots everything deer and up with .375 H&H, though.

 

I have taken a lot of whitetail with 5.56/.223. I'd say its the bare minimum though.

There also is a lot of things to consider when using 5.56/.223.
Bullet type. I like 62gr Fed fusion. Its bonded and will still expand down to 1700fps.
Barrel length. I prefer 16" plus to get higher velocities.
It is not a caliber you want to be shooting through brush or even light vegetation. It will deflect easily.
Range. I limit myself to 150 meters on whitetail.(where 556 is most lethal) Hog will get it out to as far I can make a hit.
Shot placement is key. Big whitetails will get neck shots. Smaller ones I'm comfortable with bowler room shots.
Not all but most blood trails are on the light side but I have also DRT a lot of deer too.

I hunted a few seasons with an AR but I went back to my bolt 308win. just to change things up.

 

I'd like to take my M1 and my 6.5 this season, if I get a chance.

 

You can build a light-ish AR10.....

 

M1 would be awesome.

a 6.5g is on my short list. I’d like to get into that caliber.
