I’m in the same boat as OP. I have a camper top with a Yakima rack, but I want to be able to carry a little bit longer items, so thinking about roof rack to extend my options further out over the cab. I installed one on my 2nd gen. Very easy to do.

Anyone have experience or info on the aftermarket, cheaper ones? I see a lot of people talking about them, but none that have actually used them.

Just got back from a camping trip that included 600 miles of driving with a 75lb 2p kayak on my OEM rack. My little ones and I took it up to 90 mph (passing) on the highways, and we also went up WPA-era mountain roads and washboard dirt trails; I think it works fine for all those functions if you go slow, OP, though you may want a burlier rack and J-cradles if you plan to be off-road with a kayak often. I don’t use this kayak but every few months, so the OEM suits my purposes there. And I like how it looks too.

OE racks are the best looking racks, IMO.

Not trying to hijack the post. But got a OEM roof rack for $30 only thing is, no hardware i.e. the bracket thing you mount to the truck. Anyone have any idea where to get the parts? Or did I just waste $30?

I have the OEM rack and like it for the same uses described here. Looks like you got some good pics too. I’ll just add that after I installed the rack myself, I ended up with a pretty good roof leak when it rained hard. I ended up reinstalling the rack and used ample clear silicone the second time around. No more leaks.

No, honest question... Was hoping to not have to go that route. The dealer around my area is not the friendliest when it comes to their parts department people.

Maybe try posting in the Buy/Trade/Sell section. Might get lucky down there.

Watch the For Sale threads, Facebook Marketplace, and Craigslist. Like the Predator steps that the dealer loves to add on to the sale, a lot of people that buy them initially with their new truck purchase end up upgrading to something more substantial later. I have seen them for sale for as little as $50, but they are often around $150 asking price.

My neighbor picked up a Prinsu rack and needed the OEM weatherstripping that he threw away when he installed his OEM roof rack. He traded me his OEM roof rack for my weatherstripping. :D

I just use the Yakima SweetRoll for carrying our Kayak or SUPs. https://yakima.com/products/sweetroll

I got it from my dealer, to make sure it was oem. They price matched the eBay price. I think it was like $240 or something like that.

So far I like my OEM roof rack. I did a lot of comparison shopping online until I found an option that was reasonably priced with shipping. Some shipping costs stripped away any savings in the base price so make sure to check the total price. I never found a one stop shop where prices were the best all around all the time and even local dealers with coupons seemed high especially when tax was included.

A lot of people don't like the OEM rack but it suits my needs and didn't increase any road noise or kill mpg. It was a fairly easy install and so far no leaks. Next up is suspension upgrade since I've put it off for so long.

OP I was in your shoes 3 weeks ago, I bought it and installed it. Two days later I removed it, the quality for an OEM part is just not there.
To be honest I bought them for the looks and occasional ski cargo box but they are just not well designed and built. After only having it installed for a couple of days I removed them and the supplied foam gasket/washer to prevent water from leaking in was absolutely mangled. If you were go to ahead with it I suggest you buy some rubber washer/gasket to use instead of the foam ones.

I like mine, gives me something to grab on when I climb up on the sliders.

They are noisy when not in the stowed position though. Make me wonder how loud Prinsu and the other aftermarket racks are.

With the Wind Deflector strip, wind noise is negligible. Since installing the wind deflector on my Martin Off Road, I can't remember the last time I had wind noise resonating into the cab. I believe it also really helped to lower the front deflector to the lowest position, but as I did both at the same time, I'm not sure what made the biggest difference.
