I've fixed mine twice now, and the last time it only lasted a week or so. Anyone know what the source of this problem is so I can fix that too? Or at least an alternative way to fix it so it will be more reliable?

This fix looks really easy..question I have..is there anything else (modification) that anyone has done instead of repairing the 510s?

A lady at work stopped me when she saw my truck, asking if it was mine. She mentioned her husband had one, and just had his temp gauge fixed under a TSB.... Has anyone heard of a TSB on this? Not that it matters to me, but maybe for the people where a bit of solder still doesn't fix it....

Hey i notice when i took mine apart, the 510 was loose also. I didnt have a solder gun so i pushed it back on and plug it back to the truck and it work. but i also notice that the 510 was really really hot now. Does that mean i should replace the 510? If so where do i look for the part? i also notice that the 510 was a little darker then the other. So im asuuming the resistor fell off cause it was 2 hot, is that correct?

Fixed mine. But, I broke one of the plastic clips when removing the plastic/smoke cover. I was even being careful. Crazy glue worked fine. I found which 510 was loose by plugging it in and putting pressure on them with my finger because there was no obvious sign of a disconnect. When I found which one was loose the entire 510 came up when soldering, I guess I started with the end that was still intact. I got it to lie ack down after several minutes and a few tries.

I did this fix the first time re-soldering only the one bad looking 510. The other resisters looked fine. That lasted about a year. When it went out the second time I was sure the display was fried. Not so! All of the 510 resistors needed re-soldering.

By the way, I too lost the two clips that hold the overhead console up. I was able to get two more from a dealer for about $4.

Also, when I was "sure" the display was fried, I contacted the manufacturer of the display, Futaba. They told me that that the little black burn mark in the corner is normal. In fact, that's an indication that the vacuum seal is still in place. If that mark turns white, the vacuum seal is broken. If that happens, which it almost never does, you can't fix it. You have to get another module from Toyota.

Thanks again for this most excellent thread!

Just got my Tacoma back from the stereo shop yesterday and noticed the compass not working. I figured they left a wire loose or something after dynamatting the roof so I took the overhead trim piece off but everything was hooked up. I did a quick 'compass' search and here I am.

Those resistors are TINY! The pics above make them look pretty big but they're ~5mm x 3mm or so! My soldering job looks so super shitty but it works now- great writeup!

Did this once and it lasted a couple of months and then it went out again. My soldering skills suck so I took it to a tv repair shop and they soldered both 510's for me ($10) and it has been working now for 1/2 a year. Great fix write up!!!

This shop fixed mine a month ago: www.siliconmethod.com
I took it apart after they did the soldering...it looked good. They put in new resistors with some kind of heatsink underneath. As long as it lasts a long time, I'm happy.

Mine just went out. I cried a little, then searched the forum, found this thread, performed the fix, and cried again (this time with joy) when it worked. Seriously, I love you guys.

On a side note, I bent the hell out of the little metal clips when I pulled the console out and I can't get them back into shape quite right--even with my Leatherman!--so I'm going to see if Toyota will sell me just the clips. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the post, and merry Christmas!
