I have a 2nd gen 5 speed manual with 70k miles on it and I have a hard time getting it into reverse most of the time. Is that normal for the 5 speed?

I never had an issue with mine. I'm assuming you're talking about the 4.0L? Have you changed your MT fluid? I would start there.

You could get the 5spd with 4.0?
EDIT: Oh yeah, 2nd gen was 5spd only?
All this 4.0 talk makes me feel so inadequate at three and a half...

It’s a 2010 2.7L, pretty sure the fluid hasn’t been changed since new. I’ll probably get the fluid changed in another 5k.

That can be similar to the somewhat common issue of 1st getting blocked when stopped. On a few MTs now, I have found that Redline solved that for me, including the couple times that it happened on the Taco. You might give Redline a try. MT-90 if the spec matches?

2nd Gens with 4.0 are 6 speed MT, the 5 speed MT was only paired with the 4 cylinder.

Thanks, i’ll try redline when I swap the fluid. Hopefully it’s just old fluid and not something mechanical.

Fluid should take care of it. It makes a noticeable difference on mine.

    timing...
I'm in Houston driving everywhere constantly and in the last 48 hours my transmission has decided it doesn't like shifting anymore. i mean, i have to have the stars aligned for an easy shift to/from any gear. I'm double clutching and laying completely off the throttle just to shift and get around, missing shifts and sitting at lights, delayed constantly. only like 500 miles to go before home! i think i skipped the MT fluid change at 60k when i did all the others, so the trans fluid is probably over 40k old. i was reading this thread a few days ago and didn't realize it was about to suddenly hit me in the face. damn.

I did mine at 40k and 90k. It was definitely noticeable at that point.

I haven't gotten there on the Taco yet (just 33k on the MT-90), but I have felt that on our past MTs. The fluid just takes a dump. Also, the UOA for the stock stuff was not very stellar. See the MT and diff fluid thread.

    soooo...

when it rains it pours. or something.

i show up at my shop who's done all my work including the clutch & pedal stuff to get new MT fluid. while pulling in the truck he notices something's not right, uneven pedal feel. i told him i noticed some noise today for the first time, just a little, but it also feels a little off second half of pedal travel downward.

fingers on the pressure plate are moving all over the place, truck unsafe to drive, he won't give me back my keys but I'm not fighting that. it's gotta be opened now for the third time to find out what's up. if it's a URD problem i will be so screwed. they have nothing in stock. gawd, what to do. i can't see this being an install issue and neither can my builder. but anyway, it probably opens up tomorrow and I'll have more info.
