I was under the impression that if you are about to plow into an animal, the ONLY thing you should do is hit the brakes. The animal will either get out of the way, or you will end up with a hood ornament. Don't EVER swerve because you can lose control of the vehicle and end up in a ditch, or even worse... I'm sure my initial reaction would be to swerve too...

Glad no one was injured! That's the most important part.

That seems kinda unsafe then huh!? I got a pretty big mark on my head and if I was a money hungry liberal I'd think I'd have a pretty good lawsuit against toyota. But we are both okay and I believe in working hard to get money, not scamming people.

Yes I think it will be totaled and if it is sell it to the insurance company then buy it back if you do that you can fix it and have money lift over. My buddy did that and got 15g for his 02 tacoma and bought it back for like 2g.

Yeah, I drove the pickup home (wreck happened 3 miles from our house) and then took her to the hospital in her mini cooper. The truck was starting to overheat though, but suspension, turning, and all round driving was completely normal. I'll buy toyota's till I die!

I think the side airbag may have saved you from worse injury. Had you smacked your head on the window and it busted (I have personally watched this happened), you would have stitches in your scalp most likely. It also keeps the glass from busting all over you and flying through the car if you happen to roll.

I'm just saying shouldn't all of the airbags deployed?! Not that big of a deal we are both okay and I will still always buy toyotas from here on out because they are so tuff. My friend calls em big four wheelers!

i am surprised the fronts didnt....how fast were you 2 going at the time though? I want to say the fronts only deploy when you come to an abrupt stop from a certain mph.

You make a good point. We were going around 40 mph and the deer shot out of the trees to where we couldn't even see it till it was right in front of us. Then we hit the trees but it wasn't exactly abrupt we kinda rolled through some and then into more. The trees on the side of the ditch weren't like 100 year old oaks or anything, just young pines.

The front airbags can afford to have higher deceleration thresholds than side airbags, because there is more crush space and more room for the airbag to deploy. (Remember there are no side crumple zones...) I don't see much frame deformation. The aluminum bumper beam isn't even crushed.

In an actually severe frontal crash, the shockwaves can be seen rippling through the frame and body, often causing the gas door to pop open. :)

If they do total the truck how do they decide the value?! The truck only had around 3000 miles on it. Would they use kelly blue book or some other certified source or do they just go "eh it looks like it was worth about 16,000 dollars." The adjuster came and looked at it, but he didn't say if it was totalled or not. I was at work and my wife didn't ask him. Don't you think he would have told her if it was totalled. All he told her is that we will be getting a call from the insurance agency soon. Man I've never had to deal with a wreck in my life. It's got me up past 11:30! I guess I'm gonna go try to get some sleep and say a prayer. Everyone thanks for the concern for my family, now just pray I don't get screwed by my insurance company. I just want to be able to drive my tacoma again. I've never been so proud of a vehicle. Shoot I just sold my supercharged scion tc so I could by my first brand new truck ever and it didn't even last two months! Well God said it will be okay (Romans 8:28) so I'm tryin not to sweat. it. later yall.

Either KBB or some internal metric. Some insurance companies offer optional coverage that pays the purchase price if the vehicle is totaled or stolen within the first two years - useful for leased vehicles.

Plate bumper for your next truck...
