4.0L is the V6. Are you sure everything is installed correctly?

The 4.0 doesn't sound ricey if everything is installed correctly. It certainly doesn't sound like a V8, but it has a very pleasant, rasp free exhaust note. At least with the catbacks I've heard.

is it just the muffler and the rest of the pipe stock? that limits sound alot..

Yeah there are good sounding exhausts for the 4.0, but the flowmaster 44 is not one of them IMO. I don't like it loud though so its just personal preference.

no the installer used 2.5 piping that was bent to have it come out the back as duals would the size pipe have anything to do with it

Agreed...of the Catbacks I've heard, the Flowmasters have the most rasp...and rasp is what makes things sound rice.

Go with TRD, Banks, or Magnaflow for a more subtle growl with less volume. All around, they just sound better.

dont put a muffler designed for v8 sounds on a v6 motor.

change the muffler it will fix the sound.

You have...we all here have a small displacement, highly efficient V6-hell mine is the 3.4-a whopping 204 cubic inches. No way are ya going to achieve the sound your ear actually wishes for. A lot of guys here have gotten close though with the Magnaflow, Dynomax and others, but it is what it is and all your Flow is doing is taking that smooth exhaust pulse and dumping it sloppy because that muffler is so wide open. I personally hate the sound of v8s behind 2 chamber Flows because they have that ugly hollow borble. You CAN manipulate the sound you have with slant cut tips-they can null the rasp maybe just enough to be acceptable. Worth a try

I think it's funny how some Tacoma owners can't comprehend the fact why their 6-cylinder vehicles from Japan sound ricey and don't sound like a V8. This is just beyond me. Our trucks are basically ricers with a bed as much as nobody wants to admit it.

Problem now is you spent good money on this muffler and its install. You cannot unring this bell. So another suggestion I have is you can have resonators installed behind the muffler or you can get two of those "baffled" type tips that will definately remove some of the annoyance and maybe hand ya back some growl. Unfortunately you need to add a bit more money. Or just live with it.
