What's needed to off-road in a 2wd SR5

Well I was alot better off than that at least.

I got high centered while in a little mud on the side of a mountain. No winch or come along.

1 shovel, recovery boards, 2 pissed off dogs and 1 pissed off wife.

 

Oh man. Getting stuck in mud sucks big time too, it just gets everywhere. Then you spend 2 months finding mud all over the interior haha!

Make sure you have some recovery gear. At the very least, I'd bring recovery straps, recovery points (D-Rings + Mounting Bracket), recovery boards, perhaps a shovel and a hi-lift jack. If money isn't an issue, you can consider upgrading your bumper to one that can accommodate a winch.

 

No. Absolutely not. If your truck even approaches the edge of the road your EOPD will activate the AEBS, completely disassembling the entire vehicle... and locking the glovebox with the dealer only code.

 

I worked pipeline in a stock 2wd [w/ K02s] Colorado cause they wouldn't give me a 4x4 - I took that piece of crap to places where most thought it couldn't go - often to the amused laughter of my co-workers who went into 4l to get through some mud and here I was in a 2x4 hauling major ass.

2wd is capable of a lot more than most people think. It may also take a bigger beating because of it.

It did also get stuck in a flat field of wet grass once though. Was pulled out by a guy with 4x4 and bald tires.

I've heard stories from my Dad about the FJ that my grandfather had that they used to take up into Rockies a lot on weekends. Apparently they'd encounter VW vans at the top of some pretty surprising trails.

On the flip side of that, a trail group I was running with in Moab a few years back (might have been riding "sweep" because of a number of non-working radios among the group) was being trailed by someone in a Subaru who seemed to think that "4x4 only" was more about drive train than about ground clearance. They clued in and turned back when the road into the actual trail started to get a little spicy, though.

 

I had a Baja Bug about 30 years ago, that thing went thru some gnarly mud, hills, and trails. Had skid plates, sliders, and a winch so was able to get along pretty good with it.

In general yes you can. Even without changing tires.

This was all l could dig up, did a pretty good job building it in the driveway as a 20 year old kid way back then.

Thanks brother, painted it with black primer so l could scratch it up in the woods, really fun car. It was a 1600 Dual Port with a better carb and distributor but with those 31" tires it was not very fast.

 

Not quite at @shakerhood ‘s level of awesome, but this was my first off-road vehicle. This rear wheel drive 1972 Celica drove hundreds of miles down the logging roads of BC, in all weather. Fitted it with chains and snow tires in the winter and nothing stopped it, except the rust.

Sitting pretty in this pic. Wasn’t so beautiful once I got done with it. Not that I went out of my way to abuse it, but the previous owner had put a fresh coat of paint over all the bondo and rust. The car wasn’t long for the planet when I bought it.
