The 2021 Toyota Hilux is impressive, makes the Tacoma look like a Camry. :(

There’s definitely going to be some derping going on If they brought these to North America. Toyota did the Chrome fans a solid with the grille surround.

Anyways......I’m sure they are fine being Toyotas. Not sure I love the front, but would get used to it I guess. Looks expensive if you were to jam the nose into anything.

 

It’s the classic case of people desiring what they can’t have and thinking the grass is greener on the other side.

If I were to think of one negative that really sticks in my mind it’s definitely the inferior feeling of the Hilux interior.

Drivetrain is sound but it is gutless.

Same reason why every a lot of people that don't own a landcruiser talk about how superior they are.

Now keep in mind I own a FZJ80...and I love it. But it has not been a model of reliability, it gets shitty gas mileage and it's slow. There will alway be a subset of TW that idolizes something they don't or can't have because , well....because they can.

 

You have to realize the market outside of the US and surrounding nations. We by far, have the LARGEST vehicles on the road and getting bigger every generation. A lot of other countries have very compact vehicles, which makes the Hilux their large truck. There is a market for both in the US which is why the "real" power goes to the larger models (Tundra, F150, Silverado, etc.).

 

So much fun, and few suspect the 300+ hp

If you’re pricing a full sized diesel true, in Canada the Diesel is a $4000 option for the ZR2 and similar in the USA I believe. I do a fair but of miles annually, around 30k and instead of dumping at least 25% more fuel in the Tacoma this is good so far cost wise. Also when getting out in extended trips in back country areas the ability to go so much longer on a tank is really nice. The only downside is the lack if mid range acceleration, it is certainly slow.

 

Diesel is more costly to maintain/repair...I'm good with my gasoline engine. If I needed more I would have bought a bigger truck...not to mention that it looks like a Ridgeline...

 

Why do you think it is a problem in Canada??

Ever seen a diesel start in -35? Heck -10 they hate life.

 

What yr were these diesels made? Mine started just fine last week in Brisay up the Trans Taiga at -10C with strong winds beside a massive body of water making it feel much colder

 

I like the Hilux but not more than my 3G taco

I was wondering this too. Coming from a Tundra and being around a lot of friends and family that have/had trucks here in the rust belt, the composite bed is one of my favorite features. I've had ~2000lbs of gravel "gently" put in the bed by a front loader, it was supposed to be 1500lbs, but it was heaped up quite a bit. I've moved tens of thousands of pounds of lumber, block, gravel, river rock, concrete, tools, conduit, bikes, ATVs, furniture, fire wood, kayaks, and everything else I could fit that weighed less than 1800lbs. A quick wash down and it looks like new with a few scratches and scuffs, but no chunks missing, dents, or gouges. I've been somewhat impressed by its durability honestly.

 

Thats a very small sample size. If you're in quebec you'll see a diesel in the super cold soon enough.

I only miss it in the way that my wife's Forester XT is boring to drive with the CVT.

We only had the T5. The R would have been much more fun.

The Hilux is in almost country in the world except the US. They would not sell so many if they were not reliable.
I drove a 3 year old one in Cambodia last year. It's great. Better than my 2015.
