Demon Mounts for Tacoma D Ring Upgrade without Off-road Bumper

I think it’s cool that Demon mounts fabricated a bracket for the Tacoma so you can install heavy duty D rings without an off-road bumper install. They utilize bolts on the crash bar where the tie down attachments go. That being said, do you think they will hold up well if I ever actually need them? Has anyone ever tested these to make sure they hold up?

Probably both. They look like mall crawler nipple rings.

 

Been discussed many places. They sell them as decorative, might work ok in a light pull situation. But certainly wouldn’t try a real recovery. People have contacted the company, they do not rate them for recovery from what I’ve heard.

 

If you were to pull from them, I’d want to pull from both not just one to distribute the load and hopefully not pull them off

From what I’ve seen, nobody has used these in a full recovery application. I could be wrong and someone out there has but I doubt it for this location. This has more been seen as an esthetic appearance mod vs a recovery point or at the least a tie down location. I personally wouldn’t test this location at high load tension resistance.

 

I guess in a emergency I’ll use all 3 points.

The 2 demon brackets and the towpoint on the drivers side that was welded on my 2017 sport.

I hope I never need to use the front and can just get pulled from the hitch plug .

These are for decoration only. They are in no way a well thought out, sound design. The fact that they are even sold (regardless of what the manufacturer states, a stranger attempting to help you will have no idea what the terms and conditions of the product are) with the ability to affix a 'traditional' piece of recovery gear is incredibly dangerous. Proper foresight was not applied.

I would be curious though... can you hear them while driving? Either slapping around, or are they pretty stationary?

What are they attached to that would make them dangerous when attempting a recovery?

From what I am assuming... just gut guess here, they are attached to a trim piece that is not stabilized by the frame/body of the tuck?

Potentially causing a snap back?

 

The photos in Post #14 (above) clearly show that these are attached to the front cross-member on the frame.
They are attached to the same front cross-member that the factory hook is attached to.
They are designed to actually wrap around this cross-member, and pull directly from that wrap-around attachment, and not from the bolt itself. The bolt merely holds it in place, while the wrap-around design provides the strength. These are literally as strong as the cross-member on the frame - the cross-member on the frame will fail before these fail !

Mr. Engineer (above) didn't look very closely at the photos, and he certainly has never seen one of these in person, or he would not have made such a mis-informed statement.

I have these on my truck, so I know what I am talking about here.

 

The crossmember will fail wayyyy before these will. That is the problem. It is a tie down point from the Factory, not a tow or recovery point.
