OP I have a 6 inch lift on 33's and with a travel trailer behind me at another 3800 pounds, gear, wife, dogs and kayaks I never have to stress about towing in S 4, with that said, you know as well as I do that it's windy as hell out there today in Florida so if you saw a headwind your truck is going to live in 4th but jump around as the wind moves. It's cool, just takes a bit of getting used to...

Well that explains your higher rpms. You dogged it yourself. ECT mode for you is your best bet.

They are already telling me that. I tried s5 and every combination. I bought an automatic so I don’t have to deal with all that. I’m done here didn’t expect 3 pages this quick. If you all enjoy the way this truck drives that’s great. I still think it sucks and was just seeing if this was normal and apparently it is.

My truck at 75 is turning 1800 to 2000. How are you turning 3500? Yes, maryland has hills.

This is not the truck for people who like to cruise at 80 mph. Sorry, it just isn't.

    Your basic choices are:

    A) learn to be happy getting your ass passed at 70 empty, 65 with a load,
    B) run at 80 anyway and learn to be happy with the high winding engine and shitty milage,
    C) trade it for a vee-eight motor, or
    D) take the suspension off and put on 265/65 michelin highway terrains.

Ect sucks just as bad. The problem is it downshifts and hangs there forever for no reason. With or without ect and s5. I’m done just keep getting the same answers. I’ve owned over 25 cars and trucks and none drove like this

What Tacoma engine was ever a highway bruiser? It’s lineage has never been powerful.

    Should’ve and could’ve bought a Tundra.

I have a 2021 SR V6 4x4 and the transmission is fine, other than 6th gear. I simply put it over into S and upshift into 5th. It's now habit. I drive 70-75MPH most of the time in mildly hilly extreme northern CA. RPM in 5th at 75 MPH is around 2200 which seems more appropriate for cruising than the super tall geared 6th that downshifts into 5th even going up 1% overpass/bridge grades. Gas mileage is the same at 18-19 MPG. Way less gear hunt.

I was getting 16.4 mpg at 75-80. I already expect that it’s just a struggle to keep a steady speed without constantly thinking about it. Maybe my truck is just a pile of shit. Don’t know but like I said I’ll deal with it

Imagine if you will, that an engine only has so many rev in it, then it dies.
So if you rev it all the time, it will fail sooner then an engine that doesn't scream it's brains out going down the hi-way.

The difference in the 1GR and the 2GR is the stroke. The longer stroke of the 1GR is what gives it the extra 500 cc of displacement and a bit more bottom end torque. However the shorter stroke of the 2GR allows the engine to rev higher. The shorter stroke also lends to a slightly smoother engine even though they are both 60° V's.

In other words....the 2GR can rev. Won't hurt a thing. And with the current factory tune which leans towards efficiency....you need to rev it.

I guess people are different. I knew this truck was a dog, test drive confirmed it. It's slow, outdated,
Depending on your use, if you don't need the aggressive tires you could go back to a lighter and more highway friendly tire.

You also mention you bought it cash...depending on the deal you got you could sell it and break even, or even make a little bit on it and get something else.

Where your argument falls apart is for two reasons 1. It doesn’t rev high all the time and 2. Engine failures aren’t due solely to rpms, typically caused by issues other than just wear.
