Hmmm. Maybe a MT would have been better for you......he says after the horse has left the barn.....
I use ECT which is new for me as my 4Runner does not have this and the FJ was a MT. But....I also automatically switch to "sport mode" as soon as I hit a hill (up or down) which is a habit that I picked up from the 4Runner. I hate braking all the way down a hill and the trans hunting for a gear on the way up. You have modded the truck with a lift. Was it such a "dog" before the lift?
Also, if you put the truck details in your profile, we would not need 20+ post just to get the specs. Just sayin'.

This. Engines fail for many reasons, RPM can be one of them but isn't the only one. My previous car had engines failing for the exact opposite reason...low end torque. Turbo spooled too fast, people were mashing the gas in high gears wanting the engine to just power through the high gears and were sending snapped rods through the block.

Driving stick here, so a bit different situation but I have no complaints. I roll about 2800 rpms to cruise at 70.

So, you're telling me that two of the same engines, run on a dyno, one at idle, one at 5,000 rpm, they will both last the same amount of time?

I agree - I have no idea why Toyota thought it was a good idea to put a high revving engine in a truck - or at least an engine which needs to be wrung out to get any power; then when you do get into the higher revs the engine surges. Sometimes I take off in second and if its not just right I put my foot through the floor and it just doesn't go anywhere. The 4.0 was vastly superior in terms of its power delivery.

Honestly it wasn’t any better stock. I lost a little gas mileage but not bad. I’m in the dirt every week riding and wanted better tires and a little more clearance. I’ve said it 10 times already. I’ll deal with it until I can afford a new truck. Just thought there was something wrong with my truck and I get 4 pages of guys saying do this do that. Drive in thi gear or that. I just want to drive it like every other truck I’ve owned but I’ll have to adapt and live with it for now. Doesn’t change the fact the the drivetrain sucks

Sell it and get something else.
I suggest you test drive the next one because guess what... this is your fault, nobody else's. Not me, not Toyota, not your buddy, it's all on you.

Lol no. But, if I take an engine DESIGNED to run at average 3500 rpm and an another engine DESIGNED to run at 1800 rpm, put both on the test bench they will last the same amount of time.

I don’t know if it would help but, have you updated your transmission software yet? Given the age of the truck, it should have the tsb available, no?

I just drove 100 miles each way with my dirt bike and my sons. No issues at all for me, if it got windy I moved it to S5 and cruised at 70-75 around 2500rpm. Got around 18mpg and my son was comfortable in back.

I sit in the right lane at speed limit. But if you like 70-75 mph I can see why people complain.

You don't say what engine and trans.

I had a 2014 TRD Sport, V6 MT6, and everywhere I went it felt like I was pushing it! That truck has roughly the same engine and stats as my '14 FJ, but they're as different as night and day!

One day I just couldn't stand it anymore, and I sold it. Then I had to find another truck. Now here's the weird thing: I bought a 2010 Prerunner AC, I-4 MT5, and it's just fine. I don't know why, but it feels way more frisky than the '14. So I'm happy. Finally!

To each their own. Personally, I love mine. Over 90% of my driving is highway driving at 70+. 5th and 6th are overdrive gears. This truck is geared for MPG. If you want more power, regear it or tune it. The 2nd gen is geared different and so it is faster off the line. But the 2nd gen isn't geared anywhere near as much for MPG. Not to mention this engine also goes back and fourth between direct and port injection. Direct injection is how they get 42 more HP than the 4.0L. But, direct injection, especially with this tune, makes its power up at 3500 RPM. The consensus is that it isn't that big of a deal, although definitely different.

    Nobody is telling you that.

But depending on the load, a 3.5 turning say, 4000rpm and one turning 1000rpm, the one spinning faster may outlive the one turning slower.

You are clearly aggravated enough. The next gen isn't availablelish until model year 2024. Doesn't sound like you can wait that long. Good resell value goes a long way to a Ford Ranger.

More productive than waging war in an internet forum.
