    Not too tight. You want to be able to pull the chain up slightly and see part of the teeth that ride in the track.

    There's a 3/4 ish nut that holds the bar to the housing. Next to, or under that, there should be a small slotted bolt. You loosen the large nut and turn the slotted bolt with a flat head screwdriver. The slotted bolt has a gear on the end you can't see that tightens or loosens the bar. You want some gap between the bar and chain but more then 1/4" is way to big.

    I guess that answers the question about a tree falling in the forest...all I heard was chainsaw.

    It did kinda remind me of those fancy feller/bunched thingies. Those are pretty cool.
