You really can't go wrong with this approach. I do the same. Place mine on metal cookie sheet and in the corner out of the way.

You ever have it simply not fire though? Low 30s when I work up first morning and it fired right up. Warmed tent up in a few minutes. Mid 40s teh next morning and full canister. Would NOT fire at all until later in the morning after coffee and after I was warm! Love this thing when it works.

Metal sheet is a good idea. I just put mine all the way by my head and it rests against the hardshell part.

besides a propane heater, what other options are there? i was thinking a battery (jackery/goal zero) and an electric blanket. That would help, but wouldn't warm the inside of the tent

This is why we are getting rid of our $3k soft tent and switching to a $3k hard shell. Folding it up and getting the cover on in 10 degrees with frozen hands is not something I would wish on anyone.

Diesel heater. Safer than a propane heater but WAY more expensive.

    You can buy one:

    Or build one:

you can buy a 12v diesel heater for way less than that. I havent researched anything, and found this:

    https://www.amazon.com/SUPERFASTRAC...ords=diesel+heater&qid=1604948994&sr=8-5&th=1

    but in reality,
    1. how much time are you actually spending in the RTT, to need to have heat
    2. how much space do you need to heat - most tents are 2-3 people, and enough room to sit up.
    3. you probably dont need to heat the RTT while youre sleeping - just to go to sleep, and then to wake up

I would say to buy a case or 2 of those thermal hand warmers, and strategically place them around your tent/in your sleeping bag

Yeah absolutely you can build one for cheaper!
Some people aren't handy to design and built their own stuff.
I know some people much prefer to spend the cash and have a professional plug and play system. No different than people bringing their truck to the shop to have it built.
I was just providing some information I have found.

I camped in -10C this fall and that was cold enough for me haha
No need to be camping in -20C or colder! My tent is put away and the skis are out.

yea.. I wont be camping in that kind of weather, unless its an emergency. And I definitely dont have a diesel heater.

-10c is very cold. I wont volunteer to go, but if it happens, it happens haha. I do like winter camping because the fire actually works.

I bought a ground tent yesterday, since I will be out of a RTT for a year+. I feel like a peasant now :pout:

Yeah cold winter camping is not very comfortable… lol
Not to mention the entire inside of the tent was covered in ice. I even had one of the windows open half way.

Why did you get rid of the RTT?

ive snow camped a couple times. once in a backpacking tent and another time in a hammock. both times we're not very fun with not a lot of sleep. i thought a rtt would get me out there again, but honestly, it would take a lot to get me to do it again. there would have to be some fun activity i was out there for. call it a music festival and im there no questions

The hand-warmers work great. They sell larger ones. I use those.

Anyone here with one of those no name China hardtop rtt? I’m currently using a soft shell tepui. Planning of switching to a hardshell pop up style. However, I want to know if there’s that big of difference between the CVT/roofnest ones compared to the no name brands. Is it worth paying double the price? Would like to hear real world experience in the no names.

Unfortunately I think the camping season is over for me. Looking to take the tent off and store for the winter, but I also have a field mice problem in the shed...Any recommendations for storage? I was thinking of wrapping it in some sort of poly or shrink wrap.
