When searching for a tacoma I saw some concerns..

    1. Frame rust

    2. Oil leak on the timing chain cover (small leak)

The major concern I have is the frame rust. Does anyone know if the 4 Runner also has this issue as well? I live in Ohio and we do use road salt of course. So, with that being said has Toyota solved their frame rusting issues? If I buy a Tacoma or other Toyota product will they have a newer frame design or more then likely have the frame replaced on older models?

Pretty sure most of these issues were in the early model Toyotas i just wanted to ask the question I couldn't find any other topics.

It seems still having issues even the newer trucks are going in to be treated.

The salt is not near as bad as the Liquid Brine.

Even Rust free Virgin frames need lots of love in a winter climate where the truck sees chemicals

The 4Runners are said to be better but a few winters they can be just as bad .

4x4`s get driven in the worst winter weather then most often parked to the next event with out a look.

What would be your best recommendation when looking for a Toyota to buy one through a certified Toyota dealer and make sure the frame is under coated? If I buy a Toyota which would you choose? Tacoma or 4 Runner I do like both..

Depends on your needs. Do you need a pickup bed, or a family hauler? Rust protection is a must, especially if you live up north. That isn't unique to Toyota though. Just be sure to avoid the rubberized undercoating. That just seals in the flavor and rots itself faster.

It comes down to just what age range vehicle your shopping for.

As each Toyota Dealer is independently owned some are much better then others.

It comes down to the buyer checking things out on each vehicle you look at.

Unless your checking yourself people can say most anything at times for a sale

What is more important having a bed to haul assorted interesting things or a 4x4 to haul two or more people .

I own both so it is not a issue. If I needed to haul people and cargo I would get a 4Runner and a trailer just my preference not a fan of the double cab tiny beds.

kinda lopsided biased feeble to ONLY point out

    rust on toyota products

there are rams & chevy runni around in just as bad if not Worse shape as Toyotas

the salt/brine in any particular area is an equal opportunity

many can & do ride on beaches/shores & boat ramps in brackish /salt water

others live in snow/sleet/ice environs in many states & altitudes that use salt/brine

get real it effects ALL about the same

We were really talking about Toyota trucks and other Toyota 4x4 vehicles if I want to talk about rust on Dodge Fords or Chevy 4 x4 vehicles I post on those Forums .

Lets not forget How the Liquid Brine Effects the Rebar and other Steel in Bridges Thank what ever God is your favorite we have not had a major Bridge Failure

Yep - not all dealers are created equal. In my area, certified vehicles have had nothing more done than a trip thru the dealers car wash and in some cases a lot of tire shine sprayed around in the engine bay. Looks sell.
In many cases, that "certified" check list...with dozens and dozens of check marks was completed in about 30 secs.
If I had a dollar for every so called "Certified" vehicle that I've popped the hood on that had a dirty air/oil filter + more, I could eat lunch everyday for a month at my favorite greasy spoon.

The most recent frame service campaign covers 2011-2017 toyota tacoma's. My new 2013 frame got undercoated before driving it off the dealer's lot living in Northern Vermont. 7 years later it just got the free CRC treatment and extended warranty.
So this latest bunch covers now 2 and 3gens. In past 1Gen tacoma's and 1gen tundras got frame campaigns too. The 4runners are made in Japan never seen frame campaigns on them but if I owned one, I'd get it undercoated too. Salt just takes a toll on everything. My hitch receiver looks horrible. Need to wire brush and spray it with something soon.
