Yesterday was BRUTAL. Wind was ripping. Snowing, felt like my face was being sand blasted. I spent the day out in the field looking for “the big one” never did see him. My Wife came out and joined me for the last half of the day. It was damn cold. She couldn’t sit more than 10 minutes before she had to get up and move to get warm again. Which actually worked out to our advantage! Ended up finding deer all day but that last hour of light she wanted to move so we did. Ran into probably 60-70 deer crossing the fence to our side. Nothing real big. She was miserable and we were watching forks go by. I said if you want you can shoot one and be done with it. She opted to wait. Finally a rut crazed little 4x4, who I dubbed Mr. Krabs (crab claw forks) lol, jumped the fence and started raking a bush. He turned broadside and she said "I’m gonna shoot him." I said "well let’s wait. Maybe a bigger one steps out." “Zeke I’m going to shoot him” “just wait. He’s small.” “This is the biggest buck I’ve seen this year. I’m shooting him” “jus-“ BANG. So we got a deer lol. He ain’t big but it’s her first deer and she was excited. I was excited for her too. Was quite a miserable drag out as well. 1/4 mile in 20* with 30 mph winds. All in all I was happy she was happy.BDA826FF-41C7-4A2A-8486-DA17289C01BD.jpg

Went to pick up my wife’s deer from last week and apparently it was a good evening to hunt.

I see a lot of the deer aren’t opened. Does your part of the country just take whole animals to the processor? Ever have to worry about spoiling?

seriously my processor will chew my ass off if it isn't field dressed, skinned, and clean enough to cook it whole and serve to nuns.

Used to we would gut them and skin them and quarter them into a cooler on ice and process them ourselves. Now there are 3 processers within 20 minutes of the house. It’s easier to just drop them off and let them do it. They don’t care how you bring them, it’s more money for them if they’re whole :D

If I clean one you won’t find a hair on it, my dad instilled that in me. The first one I killed at 15 years old my dad handed me a knife and said “your not going to learn unless you do it yourself”. We were a mile from the cabin deep in the woods in 1990.

That's a good picture of why I process my own. I'd be pissed to take a properly taken care of deer in and get back meat from some deer that's been laying around for who knows how long before it was gutted. I like treating my meat like it's something I want to eat. I do understand why a lot of people say they don't like to eat deer.

We always have field dressed our deer. Mostly right where they drop. Makes them a little lighter to drag. I've seen other deer walk up to a gut pile and it didn't bother them.
I've got a fresh gut pile now about 200 yards from my house. Neighbor dropped one last night. A big body 3 pointer. We did drag it about 20 yards to area that gave us some room. The critters will find the pile real fast.

If people don’t like that they for sure wouldn’t like a “real” slaughter house/meat packing plant
