I'm sure you're right, i haven't towed or hauled much more than a few cinder blocks yet. Like I said, very very minor gripe.

I agree. it was different at first, but a total non-issue after you just get used to it.

i've had mine for a week and i don't have a real complaints. i got rid of an '87 5 speed montero and an '08 mazdaspeed3, which is a 6 speed manual, in order to get this truck. it's a little clunky but i've adapted perfectly to it. i'm a drummer, so maybe i have better coordination than some, i have no idea, lol.

the rpm hang is probably a by-product of the throttle by wire. honda suffered from it with their k20z3 in the latest generation of si. my wife has an '07 si sedan and it is noticeable, but nothing like this truck. i think most of the clamouring from the honda crowd was because they are used to very responsive high compression 4 cylinder engines with throttle cables.

seems like ECU tuning and associated fixes for things like this aren't popular with these trucks. kinda weird but i'll get used to it.

Yep, it pisses me off how crappy this thing shifts! Toyota did replace my clutch for me due to the throw out bearing issue. No bellhousing though, so holding my breath to see if it comes back. I drive a 2009 tacoma 4cyl 5speed at work. That thing shifts perfect, then I come home and get in my truck and regret ever buying the 6 speed! According to the Toyota regional rep, all these funny sounds and having to shift like a grandmother is totally normal for this truck. Considering trading it in and getting an auto, but really want to get it paid off and go back to not having a truck payment.

I like mine but I also have a short throw shift on mine and I did the throwout bearing shaft repair with in months of my used purchase. Just wish it was a diesel.

I had an 08 truck, with an automatic. I bought a new truck because I could not stand the auto. So I bought a stick instead, and I got to buy my dream truck!

I bought a 4-cyl Prerunner, and a BIG contributing factor to that decision was that I wanted a manual trans -but NOT the 6-speed. After 15 months, I feel that I made the right choice. I just put a hitch on the truck and did some hauling for the first time, and it did a great job. I'm thinking about the short-throw kit. Gotta read up on it.

    I'd be in Taco Heaven if I could've found a 6-cyl 5-speed.

I can see exactly what everyone means by the short 1st and 6th gears, and the RPM hang. Yea it's a bit of a piss off, but i'm still getting used to my first manual trans.

The biggest gripe I would have with it (and I havn't seen anyone else mention it yet), is the fact that the double cab doesn't come in a bloody long box!

No.. that sounds like a muscle control issue. A guy with a spinal tumor at work had a problem like that.

Really? The t56 vs the ay6? Other than manufacturer what's the big difference? If you mean the GM sports version.. eh.. Its ok, but I'll keep my trucky fist gear, its pretty handy in the real world. the ay6 shifts nicer too. . At least nicer than the metal syncro t56 don't recall the feel of the carbon synced t56.
The ay6 is the transmission for the camaro.... hopefully without the 4.171 first.
The complaints about the throw out seem odd. There's nothing special about the way its set up.

The hang isn't as impeding as it is annoying. It also makes it sound like you don't know how to drive a stick to others because each time you go to shift the RPMs stay up. You end up sounding like a rookie.

My bigger complaint is simply the dull throttle response. This is more applicable when starting out from a stop.

And sure, you get used to it somewhat and you manage to drive. But you will never be able to control it as well or be as smooth as you will with a vehicle with a more responsive throttle.

I like the 6MT for the most part. I think some good fluids like Redline MT90 would smooth out some of the notchiness I have. The RPM hang is pretty normal for modern cars since its for emissions, I think. Like the VW MKV R32, when you come off the throttle the car accelerates a little afterwards, my EVO RS did the same. I dont notice on the Taco, probably cause I'm used to it.

I had read here that Redline MT90 would help, but when I switched over to it in my 6spd, I didn't really notice any difference.

My next mod will have to be the short shifter, then i will coerse my dealer tech friends to use the laptop and tweak away the rpm hang. I will say many car drivers that tangle with a 6spd Tacoma are very shocked to get 1. a whipping, and 2. shock and awe to have to bust ass to hold thier own against a 'small' 4x4 truck.. I crack up all the time. No speeding though....
