I bought a 2008 brand new that I recently traded in. Loved the truck but was ready for something new with more amenities. I have a fully loaded 2020 TRDOR that I love everything about except the engine/transmission at interstate highway speeds; all the usual complaints... gear hunting, high revs, lag when hitting the accelerator... I ovtuned the truck and am still not happy with how it runs at highway speeds.

Looking for some feedback from the peeps who have re-geared. Did it make you 100% completely satisfied with your truck now or does it still leave room for improvement? If I knew that re-gearing would make the truck drive somewhat like my 08, I think I'd go for it. If not, it's probably about time to think about getting rid of the truck. I have these issues on flat midwest highways. I can't even imagine what it would be like driving this truck through hilly mountainous roads.

Also, curious if anyone in the midwest has any recommendations on reputable shops to do the re-gear.

I'd really appreciate all your feedback. Thanks!

I re-geared with 5.29 running 35s with added weight and ovtune. Regearing helped a lot. But when you are in the mountains or above 75. It sill hunts, not as bad. So id say it was worth regearing, but not a fix all. I think its just something you get use to, or get a new different trunk like you said. I still love my tacoma, and I take all the good over the little bad(gear hunting).

Nope. 4.88 gears, 33's, and OVTuned, and a bit of added weight. I agree it still hunts for gears in the 75mph+ range, but it's more tolerable.

Edit: I was thinking "Yes do a gear change", but I cleared it up and said nope.

Waiting patiently for OVTune to release gearlock. I will absolutely 100% use gearlock in my drives up the interstate and mountain roads. I’m on 33’s with some added weight and on stock gears. I don’t think I’ll need to regear when gear lock is a thing.

5.29s are a mistake if you're only going to 33's, imo. Better to stick with 4.88s.

I regeared to 4.88's as @Taco_dak said it still hunts for gears in the mountains and a stiff head wind. I have a topper, ARB front bumper, light side steps so not real heavy. I'm running 265 70 17's as stated gears help but not the final fix. I'm awaiting the vftune to help some more.

What was the cost for you guys to regear front and rear?

Another important point for regearing is your final crawl ratio. I think it's like 1:31ish for and auto and 1:38ish (?) for the manual tacoma (which has 4.3 gears and lower 1st gear). My point is, it's noticeable in 4Low. I've driven manual 3rd gens and my auto with similar sized tires and it's noticeable. If you go 5.29 gears, I'm sure you are going to really notice that improved crawl ratio.

Is the 2020 part of the fuel pump recall? I noticed since I've had it done the truck drives 1000 times better. It's more responsive to the pedal, and I've had less gear shifting while driving

The more gears in a transmission (especially one geared for MPG), the more gear hunting you'll get, especially if you're in hilly areas. Just stick it on cruise and let it go.

If you think the Tacoma is bad, you should hear the critics of the Ford/GM 10 speed. Some love it and say they never notice, others say it can't seem to pick a gear. Others still, whine that it doesn't use every gear sequentially (nevermind that neither do unloaded semis)

The Tacoma is built to switch gears.
    So are most vehicles.

Bummer to hear the 2020s are still having the same old problems.

It’s worse in cruise control interstate driving than foot driving IMO.

$2500, but I had a local guy do it. Take it to a shop and you're probably looking at $3k.

Mine drives fine. I'd love to ride with someone so they could point out this awful gear hunting and high revs.

I find it to be perfectly acceptable at this point as well, however, it is a relative thing. I came from a 2015 GMC Canyon 6 cyl, 6 speed AT, which shifted about the same. I do feel, however, with oversize tires and lots of weight it would be a much bigger problem. I have taken this into consideration and at some point, as my setup evolves, I may consider a re-gear to compensate for the extra weight. From what I have read, most of those that have made the change are very happy with the increased drivability and find it to be worthwhile investment.

How many miles are on it? It takes time for the truck to learn your driving.

First try OVTune (because cheaper with a noticeable difference), if still not satisfied add 4.88’s
