Yeah I really don't understand the "4.0 is stronger" argument. One drive and it's pretty clear the 3.5 has more hp. And like most modern engines, it makes that power with rippems.

If you were at freeway speeds with the 4.0 and you gave it a little more gas, nothing much happened. But the 3.5 is sprightly. Overall, the III is more fun to drive and, for sure, scoots when you put your foot in it. Where the II just kinda moseyed its way on up to speed, making a lot of noise about it all.

The cabin "feels" smaller than the II, but maybe because it's all black and square, as opposed to the sea of grey in the II, and the III has a modestly better build quality overall.

The only thing that remains to be seen is reliability. My II was as reliable as an axe head. This new one is a computer with four wheel drive.

Your 2 was a computer with 4x4 as well. Your 3 will be fine.

I would love to own a 2004, and 2015 along with my '19 trd off road. I just love these trucks.

So far I have had good relationship with mine. Daily driving, fishing, camping, and hunting. And through all of that I have done some easy to moderate off roading. It is also still 100% stock

The gripes I've had with my truck have been put to ease a bit with the more I learn about Toyota vehicles in general: archaic, clunky and slow off the line.

A good low mileage Gen 2 is hard to find now. Over the summer I picked up my 19 with 20k km on it for only a little more than a 2013-2015 with under 100k km on it would cost. The interior is much better on the Gen 3 too so it was a no brainer for me.
