The 2021 Toyota Hilux is impressive, makes the Tacoma look like a Camry. :(

It honestly took me a minute to figure out the bed sticker says "Mako." From the angle in that photo I thought it said "HARD." I thought well that's pretty rad, just having the word hard printed in big font for all of traffic to see. Don't be merging over in this lane, buddy. I'm HARD.

I had a friend who just bought her (17 Year old) son a new Ranger - it IS a nice truck. I think it is too nice for a 17 year old, lol! My 18 year old son has a 2002 Tacoma 4x4 OR and I think that is a nice truck for a teenage boy (heck I'd drive it). My son says he prefers his truck over his friends Ranger...I actually think he is telling the truth. I know I prefer my truck over the Ranger and I definitely trust my truck will last longer!

It’s fugly for sure. Seen many during my travels down south over the years. Got to ride in one down in Chiapas back in 2014. Ride seemed a bit harsh but it was a tank.

WOW - I'm one of the very few (on this forum) that actually likes chrome. HOWEVER I like chrome as an accent - not as a building material :annoyed:....I keep hearing the theme song from 'Shaft' as I look at this pic.

My wife has a high top GMC (explorer) conversion van - it is chormed out with large chrome wheels, and low profile tires - it has accent lights alongside of the vehicle and even with the dark tint windows you can see all the ceiling lights and glow from the big flatscreen tv inside the van. I paid more for that van than I did our first home in 1988! I hate being in that vehicle, but is a smooth ride. I am usually in cowboy boots and a hat (we have a horse farm)...when I drive that vehicle I feel a bit out of my element or I'm back in college in a limo headed to a strip club. My wife would like this truck - it would match her van.

Honestly, a great many of the TacomaWorld members would indeed prefer the very slow, very antiquated Hilux. They have higher weight ratings and legitmately are better suited to BrOverlanding and fitting 1,000 lbs of steel bumpers and armor. The Tacoma is better suited to most of us.

Also, in that video the dude admits that he was holding the parking brake on too tightly trying to get the thing moving, so I wouldn't put too much stock in that video as evidence of much of anything.

The non HO 3.5 ecoboost makes its 470 ft lbs at 2500 not 3500. 2.7 ecoboost is also stout at 400 at 2750 and would make a killer engine in the Taco. I see you also left off the Rangers 2.3 that makes 310 at 3000 rpm. Turbos are the future.

Also, you can't just say look where they peak. A fair comparison would be they make this % of max torque at 1000, 1500, 2000, etc. to really compare low end power.

In the current gen, the Ford folks said that nothing bigger than the I4s can fit. Probably a combo of space and altering crash tested structure. There was a similar reason for no MTs in the Chargers.

Since the next gen is on the Bronco platform, that problem will be over.

the dude in the video was only using the parking brake as a way to rev the engine up and try to get into the torque band to then pull the trailer up the incline. In the comment section he mentioned he disconnected the trailer brakes and found they were set too strong.

I genuinely apologize for using a chart that was thrown together in 2019 on a slow Saturday with the trucks we had sitting the parking lot among my coworkers. Nobody has the OEM dyno charts for all these engines accessible and clear enough for anybody to create that type of comparison. Besides, gear ratios and transmission tuning are a huge part in how the trucks feel. The argument that I usually end up bringing up is if midsize trucks were under powered then GM, Ford, Jeep, Nissan, and Honda would have put 400hp engines in their trucks when they revamped or just came to market for the first time in years. Nobody stopped GM from a 5.3 in a Colorado, a HEMI in the Gladiator, or a larger ecoboost in the Ranger. Nissan just changed the engine in the Frontier and its around 300hp. Nobody disagrees that turbos are the future. The more boostie bois the better.

There may be a safety factor to it also. These trucks are 1200lbs or more lighter than half tons. If they put 400hp turbo v6's in them, would you trust everybody you see on the road in the rain or snow with what would be equivalent to a 600hp half ton with no weight in the bed? I know I don't park near anybody because I don't trust them at walking speed in the dry with a 130hp compact.

Some think that if something isn't effortless for a tool then the tool isn't up to par. I've never heard anybody go "Awe damn, I gotta put my Jeep in 4lo to crawl up this slope, its just so under-powered." How about the tri-axle driver that normally pulls out from a stop light in third gear empty saying, "I had to use first gear when I was hauling that, this truck is so under-powered." This logic can be applied to anything. The carpenter cutting a 2x6 with a 10" miter saw, "Wow did you see how much capacity that used, better step up to a 12 inch blade." "I got two kids now so my family of four needs a 3 row SUV cause our 4runner is too small." "I started to suck air and felt warmer after walking up two flights of stairs, better stick to one flight and get me some Air Jordans to reduce my effort." The point being that you have another gear option allowing you to do something that other trucks in the class that got more power would not be able to do (ridgeline), the task got done and nothing got damaged.

Hemi's run good for a couple years....... :anonymous:

I personally only know one person that has gotten 100k miles out of one (Chrysler 300). Actually, I only know, personally, of three Rams to ever break 130k miles and they were all Cummins trucks. The one got 300k on original 5.9, manual trans (I put tranny then realized this was TW ). The frame had sections replaced, two cabs, three beds, and everything else was replaced at least once. I can't count on my hands of how many Rams that were traded in by friends with under 50k miles cause they were "tired of the bullshit and stuff not working".

    Always because TW.

I hear you there. We owned one Dodge and never considered another. It got to either 114k or 140k? Don't remember.

I did look at some Wranglers before the Taco, but thankfully made the right decision.

Although, I was mainly thinking about the Wrangler being able to handle the Hemi, and not just the Cars n Coffee crowd having problems.
