They were some of the best looking cars of that era, my uncle had a 69 convertible when l was little.

 

Ahhh...mine was a 1969 as well.

1972 El Camino

 

Spotted this rare beast a couple of summers ago. Surprisingly parked off a mountain road in Colorado, nobody around. I hope the owner didn’t mind a photo shoot.

A 1969 Shelby GT500. Looked original unrestored. Pretty sure it was original paint.





By the way, all these scoops on the early Shelbys except the 1968 year were functional. The regular Mustangs of that time however were not. The scoops on this 1969 & 1970 hood took in cold air from the front three facing scoops and let out the hot air out the back facing scoops. Also the side quarter panel scoops forced cool air to the brakes as did the front fender scoops to the front brakes. Ford teamed up with NACA (National Advisory Council for Aeronautics, the predecessor of NASA) to design the low almost flush front scoop design. More aerodynamic than most larger scoops of the day but also very functional, allowing air that sits just above the hood line into the scoops. Also the hood pins were changed in 69 & 70 cars. They were recessed down in instead of on top of the hood for better aerodynamics. Carol Shelby terminated his contract with Ford mid year of 1969 due to Ford not allowing much of his input in the designs. So, little of his designs made it to the 1969 & 1970 years. Due to Carol leaving mid year of 1969 there wasn’t a 1970 model Shelby built. The left over unsold 1969’s were re-vin tagged and sold as 1970’s with only a couple minor cosmetic changes added to define them from 1969’s. One of the obvious was stripes on the hood scoops for 1970.
