Dealer told me to kick rocks and just open a case with Toyota corporate. Probably gonna take a few more weeks

    :(

I should just be impatient and fix it all this afternoon.

What does the rest of the truck look like?

Is it only that one steel roof panel that is bad or is the hood and other metal parts bad too?

Do you use acid as windshield wiper fluid?

Buy roof rack or 3" lift so nobody will
    ever have to see it.

Hope they fix it for ya!

Looks like the civic I had years ago where the clear coat failed. Dealer said eh it’s just faded. I called corporate and they said it sounds like an issue take it back to them. Ended up getting the roof, trunk and hood repainted fir free. A two year old paint job should not be doing that.

You have a paint warranty. They are obligated to bring it back using factory paint and finish. I wouldn't do anything to it.

Wow! My paint doesn't look like that and I have a 2018 MGM too. Wait and see what corporate tells you. If they're going to cover having it fixed, see if you can pick where you want it done and then you should be good.

I'd try at the dealer. It's worth a shot.

Open a case. You mess with it and cause other damage they won't cover anything that gets damaged in the future. Who says it won't happen to another panel? Also, Toyota has certified collision centers. Look one up and go there and skip the dealer.

    update:

Toyota corp also said nothing they will do. The 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty is up (truck is over 36K miles now, but not 3 years). Good times...

Double check paperwork that came with your truck, I think most manufacturers have a separate listing for paint and rust,,, like they do for emissions components, I'm not entirely sure though.

First time I've seen this with an MGM. Granted my rear door looks like it may have been repainted before, however thickness of paint matches all around.

I have 80k on my 2017 and wash it often, also doing random inspections/one overs with the truck weekly.

I don't understand how you would just now see this and it ended up being like my buddies 07 Civic that has 300k on it.

You say it went from good to that in 3 months? I don't see how that's possible.

It went from Zero to 60 real quick. August was the last time I hand washed it and it was not this bad. However , over a year ago I do remember the middle of the roof had a small “rough patch” which I assumed was dried up filth from the environment and forgot to take care of it (didn’t want to grind in at the time). In retrospect it was the Start of the faded clear coat b/c the texture was identical to how it feels now.
Still trying to pushing on good old Toyota (sent them pics and estimates/appraisal). Aw well.

I have never real though much about paint care with any of my cars because this has never happened. I see now why people clean /wax cars so often. They must have owned a car with a cheap paint job form factory and learned a lesson.
I’ve noticed with my Tacoma (2018) ,a 2016, and a 2017 Tacoma the paint layer is much much thinner vs any other car I have owned. If you get chips/scratches here and there from highway use , trail use or just little accents (scrape the bed loading objects in it) you definitely see how thin the paint layers are until it hits raw steel. For sure it’s thinner vs any other car I’ve owned. I don’t have a micrometer to measure it lol but running your finger over any raw chip and your notice it. Even when I installed my CBI high clear rear bumper I noticed the cross section of fender I had to cut away had a super thin paint layer. I’ve cut off rear fenders on older ford rangers to clear tires and they were way thicker paint jobs (as reference). Not complaining, just a new thing for me . I have always taken paint for granted owning other cars with durable headache free paint. Just got to be very care and maintain the paint a lot more with tacos I suppose.

no lack of maintenance should leave the paint like that in just two years. that is just terrible.
