I'd demand a new truck also... Plus some compensation to go along with your trouble. ($$ or an upgrade)
Every car/truck Mfg is gonna every once in a while get a turd. It just happens sometimes no matter what. (Sorry you had to get the one bad-apple losing lotto ticket..)
I would suggest that if they don't want 'Toyota Quality' smeared all over the place they better damn-well kiss yer butt and take care of you.
I had a buddy of mine .. Bought a new Dodge Durango in I think it was 07'-08' .. 5.2 L (318) 2WD ... Engine actually spun a crank bearing after 1K miles. The Dodge dealer gave (Not 'give' .. But a better truck at the same price) him a new 3/4 ton 4X4 just so long as he didn't squawk about it all over.

I'm confused why people keep saying the dealer owes him anything. Unless the dealer messed up they're not part of this. And Dodge stopped using the 5.2 in Durango's in 2000.

Correct, but 300 miles plus pre-owned for that year ought to raise some eyebrows. At least enough to investigate it and decide if it is worth it or not. For most people, a vehicle is a pretty major investment and not something that's done every 2 or 3 years. Research, research, research.

My ex once got a recall on the brakes on her Sienna van. They milked her for an additional $600 worth of brake work that wasn't part of the recall. I told her she got screwed blued and tattooed. Her response was "I know the service manager and he's a Christian. He wouldn't cheat me". My response was -.

Once the vehicle is registered, it is no longer new and cannot legally be sold as a new vehicle. So therefore there would not be an MSRP. Sure the dealer could list it for the cost of a new Tacoma, but wouldn't because no one would buy it. I know there's a lot of used Tacoma's currently listed for the same or more than new, due to the pandemic, but that doesn't mean they're selling them for that price.

Huh? When he made the purchase, the vehicle was new. Once he signed the DMV paperwork to transfer the title and register the vehicle it because used. When purchasing you sign waivers and contracts, one of which is typically a waiver acknowledging you understand your state's "cooling off period laws". So no changing your mind, even if something breaks. Once you sign all of the waivers and contracts, you have accepted the contract written by the manufacturer, in their favor. If something breaks, you've already accepted that the course of action will be the manufacturer will fix the issue under warranty. You are not guaranteed the parts will be new, they will be OEM or similar since the truck is no longer new once it's registered and driven off the lot.
If you don't like it, develop and build your own truck.

For those who think a new truck is in order, how far into ownership an engine failure should result in a new truck? Just curious. Powertrain warranty is 60,000 miles I believe on these things.

So if your engine fails in first:
    50
    100
    300
    1,000
    20,000
    59,000 miles?
