I was curious if this was normal or not. The wheel studs coming from the hub of my front wheels extend only 3/4 of an inch.

I’ve also heard that the rear wheel studs are longer than the front. Why is this?

    thanks for the help

    Rear are Drum
    Front are Disk
That’s probably why they are different in length?

I can’t help on what the correct length would be.
A better measurement could be taken with the rotor off.

The real question is do you get enough thread into the lug nuts to hold on the wheel?

If your running Aluminum Stock wheels with the Short Shank lug nuts with washers a picture with those would help.

These trucks have all kinds of strange things done quite possible at one time the studs were changed for what ever reason.

not that I ever really looked but I never noticed a Big difference in the front and rear studs as far as length.

I will be running the aluminum stock wheels and I get about 6 full rotations on the lug nut before it’s tightened down. This is what the current system looks like. It just worries me because so many threads are exposed and it seems like the lug should have more rotations to tighten the hub (I have no idea what standard would be). Just not sure what it usually looks like because standard Toyota lugs don’t have an open top that expose the threads. (Also I know the one in the photo is not the Toyota rim. But I’ve used the aluminum Toyota rim and it has the same look with the threads exposed just as much.

Also thanks a ton for the welcome!! glad I found the site

I’ve been told the minimum engagement is 1x the stud size.
The Tacoma uses an m12x1.5 lug nut.
The stud is 12mm wide and the nut will turn 1.5mm each turn.

This gives use the formula of - Size / Pitch = Minimum Turns

12 / 1.5 = 8 There for 8 turns of the lug nut would be the minimum.

FWIW, it’s possible to have too short of a lug not.
Too short may not engage as much, or if the nut is closed end, it could bottom out on the stud and not the wheel. In your case above, you used open end nuts. You would not have this problem.

@ovrlndkull knows quite a bit about tires and wheels.
Maybe he can give his opinion?

If you are using the Toyota aluminum wheels you need the toyota mag shank lugs period!!!! The wheels are designed for those lugs only a regular or aftermarket ET lug will not work. Once tightened you should be at 7 turns which is industry standard. Aftermarket aluminum wheels need aftermarket ET lugs for the proper # of thread engagements. Yours looks to be normal length for the tacoma. Not sure what the pic here is of can't really tell.

Thanks so much for all of your help! I used Toyota lugs with Toyota rims and it fits perfectly now. It was because of the aftermarket rims that were on it with improper lugs.
