I hate vague laws like this. What is the definition of reasonable?

Certainly not zero. One?..... depends how long it took and how well it worked.

You are allowed to demand what ever you want. They are not required to do anything beyond repair.

With the price of used Tacos going as high as they are, it's not unreasonable that they conclude that it's less of a hassle to buy it back sell it as used, and sell you another either at a good price or not.

But if you came to me with that attitude, you would leave feeling worse than you came because they have 100% discretion and you have a fiesty attitude.

I see it very reasonably in my opinion. If they cannot determine, or cannot remediate, than it does not matter the miles (if under warranty.)

    Yes
I get the warranty argument but there’s a lot of issues that could be caused by the driver/owner in 60k than there could be on first tank of gas. I would suspect that this is dealer/manufacturer error. In which case I think I would also argue to get a new vehicle. I know what is signed in contracts w/ new vehicles but I would also be uneasy of an engine to malfunction at 300 miles and definitely wouldn’t like to be stuck with it fixed or not at that price tag. And that’s if the techs fixed it right. Not saying it’s the dealers fault. But better them
Take the hit and take it to Toyota corporate then vice versa.

Nope. The 3.5 has been around for quite a number of years. Only recently available in the Tacoma starting with the 3rd Gen.

Forgive me for not reading the rest of this thread but I literally just got my truck back for this same thing. Mine was cylinder #1. The foreman at the dealership said the valve guides got oblong, he thinks due to them not being drilled perfectly straight at the factory. I'm very curious what they say about yours. He told me that he had only seen them on '18s and only on the one side of the motor so he thought Toyota knew there was a potential issue with a specific line of heads and more or less was just waiting for them to break. Hearing your story (i'm assuming 1 and 5 are on different sides of the motor), that doesnt seem to be the case. The end result was a new head and 4 new valves. Crazy part is the truck runs way better than it ever did before so I suspect there was "always a problem, but just not enough to trip the sensor". It took 3 weeks total, but almost 10 days of that was just calling toyota and running tests. another 5 days in waiting for parts. Keep us updated man. fwiw, mine is an 18 with 28k

Many people trade in a Yota "with 200k and all i had to do was change the oil sometimes". It's a still kick in the balls that you decided to trade up and then are facing this. Mine had less than 30k when this happened and the dealership was talking about replacing the motor. I decided to call Toyota and lobby for a new truck. Hindsight's 20/20, and that was just a waste of my time. While I wasnt exactly thrilled at the situation, I gained a ton of faith in them and (good or bad) developed a relationship with them. After the dust settles and you realize you can just get an extended warranty... I stuck with it. It's not worth the anxiety and looking like a jackass to the people who are only trying to help the issue. It does blow though. Going through the process to buy a new vehicle sucks major balls though too...

I highly doubt there's any update at this point, unless he's still trying to unwind the deal.

Or maybe Toyota saw evidence of the OP hammering the ever lovin dogshit out the engine and refused warranty? I've seen people doing burnouts and hard full throttle runs with brand new vehicles and the ink was not even dry on the paperwork. Sometimes trouble won't raise it's ugly head and sometimes it does. Read the manual. It says to take it easy for the first 500 miles (varying throttle while doing so) and no trailer pulling for the first 1000 miles for a reason.

Or the OP got what he wanted and went radio silent. We may never know.

    It's just a damn truck.

    It's made of parts.

    Parts sometimes fail.

They put new ones in when they fail.

The only thing they can't fix is a 9 year old's temper tantrum.
