Truck comms / GMRS / Midland mxt400

Another install post ... this one is on my recent purchase of the Midland GMRS MXT400 radio... its a 40 watts of power. I upgrade the antenna to the midland 6db and utilized their ditch bracket light bracket attachment for the antenna install... i ran the power and antenna cable through the driver side firewall grommet and then ran those wire over top of steering wheel and behind the center console coming out under the glovebox ... i would have liked to put the radio in the Qi charging compartment but this radio was a tad to big, so i opted for passenger side console snugged up to glovebox ... the power requirements for this radio called for it to be direct wired to the battery which i did.

 

how do you like the radio and placement in the cab after all this time?

 

Have you had a chance to see what kind of range you are getting with it?

 

i think it’s ok ... I can def see the screen ok and can reach the unit if need be ... would def like it better in the Q charging cubby but I don’t wanna chop up the dash

 

I’m not in a really flat unobstructed area but I’m getting at least 5-7 out if it

 

Apart from drilling holes into the top of the cubby for the bracket, and drilling holes far in the back for antenna and power, what would you need to chop up? It seems like the holes would be almost impossible to see. I'm on the fence about even getting the radio because of its size, so any real-world feedback you can give is much appreciated.

 

Thinking about getting same setup. I'm in Florida so its flat but have tons of trees and buildings. Tried Midland handhelds and made it about 1/2 mile, so 5-7 miles would be great.

 

It can hit repeaters and extend that pretty easily. Lots more GMRS repeaters going up recently especially thru the southeast. Most tho require permission to use of course.

Sometimes a 90 degree adaptor on the antenna coax can buy you a little room. That's what I used to squeeze my Midland DBR2500 down there, it's 6.5" deep FWIW.

 

Put an MXT 400 and antenna on my 2011 TRD Off Road. Pleased with the look and will find out more about performance this weekend. Seems to be a popular radio for off road/overlanding and picked up a pair of the HT's to use as well.
