Looking at possibly purchasing a 2017 Tacoma TRD pro. A quick look online told me the 2017 had one of the lowest ratings mostly due to transmission problems with the gears slipping or not shifting well at all.
Was wondering if anyone could let me know about their experience with this model year before I make the purchase.
    Thanks in advance!

That's what you get for a quick look. Honestly, I may be a bit biased, but on here I see people constantly saying the 2017 is probably the best year for a 3rd gen that you can buy. Definitely can't say I've experienced any gear slippage. Plus no TSS or radar cruise and it still has the large cubby on the driver's side of the bed. And, most importantly, the GoPro mount lol.

Yeah if you want a 17’ your gonna pay for it...hook up a scan tool and check the ecu was updated to 04b04 calibration and it’s trouble free as is.

Only issue I ever had with my 2017 was the battery crapped out after 2 years. That's it. Bought an AGM battery and was reimbursed 100% by Toyota under their emergency warranty repair. No complaints from me.

2017 transmission has been fine after getting TSB...0058 in 2018. Absolutely no issues with anything else in 30k miles.

I leased mine for initially due to similar concerns. Have bought it out since. There is nothing on the newer ones that would be enough to swap it out for.

You got a source on that depreciation data? My interest is piqued.

same. but we got the MT and seems lots of complaints with the ATs... OP look into the TSB reports to improve AT performance like @AMC_Unlimited mentioned.

After my transmission software update I've had minimal issues with shifting in my 2017. Only thing I get is a little bit of a stumble on cold start after my first few starts and stops.

    I have a 2017 SR5.. bought with 34k in July 2020.

even with its little quirks, I'd buy it again.

I believe that 2017 was actually the 'better' of the 2016-2019 model years, from what I've read. Of course, everyone has their own view.
Could be wrong, but really don't care.

    I love my truck.

Only thing I can come up with is that new ones have apple carplay and older ones do not. Same truck, same tires, same shocks, same tranny, same engine, same trim.....

Back in 2016 the dealer gave me an AT to take for a 3 day extended test drive. The transmission programming was pretty awful as it constantly cycled between 4th, 5th, and 6th gears. Even with cruise control on flat highway it still couldn't decide on a gear. I'm sure the TSB's and better software programming have improved the way they behave now but that truck was lousy.

I bought my TRDOR DCLB brand new without test driving any Tacoma. I did have the 062 TSB done. These V6 are high revving engines, don't be afraid to rev over 5500rpms. Use ECT. Use Smode to keep the transmission from up shifting.
Don't lug these V6 trucks like the earlier gens.

Bought a one owner 2017 DCLB Sport AT with higher than average highway miles for an incredible price in May of this year. Had the TSB's done and am pleased with the truck through 6 months and 6,000 plus miles. From what I read and determined, the 2017 is the best year. They worked the kinks out of 2016 and none of the nanny bullshit with a trans cooler to boot.

I did the exact same thing as you when I bought mine sight unseen. I totally agree about the AT. Even with my 2 week old 2020 TRD DCLB that was manufactured on 08/2020 with the latest AT software, I've found that what you are suggesting about the AT to be accurate. Only thing I haven't done is 5500 RPM yet. I believe in a initial beak-in period and slowly work up to 5-6,000RPM shfts. I'm sure the 2017 Would behave the same way. I love my 2020, especially once I figured out the best way to use the AT.

To be fair, vehicles tend to lose the bulk of their value in the first 3 years, so that chart makes sense to me.
