I was smelling gas coming from the pump. I am having zero symptoms of a failing pump. My neighbor was kind enough to let me use the garage & hoist to take the bed off so as to have a looksee & at least replace the gasket which I did. I have been wavering on as whether, seeing's how the bed is off, to replace it anyway. Is this one of those "could last forever" or "don't fix what ain't broke" (or isn't even having symptoms) type of parts? I change the filter fairly regular. oh, & it has 240,000 on it. Bought the truck with 80,000, so it's possible the pump has 160,000 on it if it was replaced prior to purchase. I would just go for it if it wasn't 270.00. Plus now I need a radiator. Developed a mysterious crack in the plastic & JB just isn't cutting it.

If I was that far in to it, I'd throw a new pump in just 'cause. If you're smelling fuel, I'd be more concerned about rotting/corroded hoses & lines, gaskets, etc.

If it runs I would replace the radiator.

I understand that I can do the sending unit &/or pump or the whole assembly. So for those who are thumbs upping replacing “it”, the “it” would be the pump only? (Plus seal).
That might make the cost a little easier to deal with if I did both. & on the radiator, I am looking at a spectra. It seems to get decent reviews for Tacoma’s.

I could tell the smell was coming from the top o’ the tank around the pump. No visible leak though. It seems it was the tank seal. I haven’t managed to rid the area of all the gas smell, so it’s hard to tell if that totally did it though.

I'm in a similar situation, have a check engine light for a small evap leak and smell gas near the tank sometimes. I've replaced all of the vacuum hoses in the engine bay, have a new gas cap, and so my next step is replacing the three gaskets on fuel tank. Planning to do that job here in a few weeks. Have been debating whether or not to put a new fuel pump in there while I have the bed off. I read this thread yesterday, and it makes me think I could probably hold off on replacing it:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fuel-pump-replacement-mileage.618724/

Right now I'm leaning towards getting a new pump just so I don't have to pull the bed twice, and eliminating an old part that could leave me stranded. Curious to hear what other folks say here.

do you think its easier to drop the tank and not mess around
this is how the toyota shops told me they do the fuel pump replacement, it takes a little over 2 hours to drop, replace and re-attach tank from the bottom
it seems so much easier but idk

Here's what I bought. I just looked for anything that said "gasket" on the top side of the tank on partsouq.. I think the gaskets are for the sending unit, filler neck breather tube, and check valve.

[EDIT] Here's the parts diagram from partsouq, gaskets highlighted in green

I've never dropped the tank or removed the bed, so I'm the wrong person to ask. Based on my reading here on TW it seems like more people think removing the bed is easier because you can keep the fuel lines attached. My frame was replaced last year so all of the bed hardware is shiny and should (hopefully) be easy to remove. I'm planning on coating the frame in Fluid Film while I have the bed off, so that is also driving my decision.

I’ve not yet had to “drop” the tank. (I love that. Makes it sound like a walk in the park. May be for some, however i’d be st it for two days. All good though.) Plus the assembly is purty long, so probably a little tricky getting it out after you “drop” the tank. Timmah does have a vid on doing it. Anyway, hoisting it is cool cuz I am going to town on the frame & bed with the ww & ff.

ya, i don't know either which is the best way to go. removing bed seems to be a very awkward and potential hazard & body damage if something slips up or whatever
3 or so bolts on the tank (strap & front of the lower shield) and the fuel lines
pudisconnected with a long arm reaching in there with a near empty tank
its too cold here now so i get to be a worry wart all winter about it, drives me insane at times

Did you only do the pump as opposed to the assembly?

If you can get the fuel pump bracket off without breaking things knowing where the truck lives .

Your luck is good enough to Hit Power ball My luck the first trip with the bed back on the fuel pump would quit.

I plan on a new bracket after the first big mess that adventure took new fuel lines as well.

it comes down what you decide to do .

Now you've scared me. I have already had the assembly off/free of the truck. Is that were you ran into trouble?

If you disconnected all the fuel lines and did not break any you did real good!!!

Then it might have been replaced at one time.

Or my luck is just that bad.

Actually I was quite surprised it was ok. I helped someone do one & it was a mess. If mine was indeed done previously, it would have been at least 160,000 miles & at least 12 salty winters, ago.
