So I have a 2003 Tacoma Pre-runner 3.4 V6 2WD SR5 TRD. At cold start it knocks and runs rough. Sounds almost like a diesel. Only last about 15 seconds. I just changed the plugs and coil wires. I also checked the coils. All good. Truck has always run like a sewing machine. I've had the truck 2 years and had 280K on it when I purchased it. It has 320K on it now. This started after changing the oil. I've always used Castrol 10W30 High Mileage with one quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer with a K&N oil filter. This time I used the same oil with Lucas but with a cheap Toyota brand oil filter. First time it did this, it smoke for a few seconds then stopped. No exhaust smell in coolant overflow. No oil in the coolant or vice versa. No burning coolant smell from exhaust. So what could cause this? Only does it for a few seconds then goes back idling smooth and quiet.

I had this happen to me once and Advance Auto refunded the price of oil filter. K&N are expensive but the hex pattern really helps filter changes without dropping the pan.
    What did FB say? o_O

People saying rod knock, blown head gasket, transmission flex plate, cold start valve, oil leak down, fuel washing out the cylinder lol. All kinds of goofy shit. I mean hell it started the day after I changed the oil lol.

I favor the simplest fix for an issue related to most recent repair (filter).
Not to rule out other causes of new engine noise but if changing the filter fixes it

Yeah just crazy. It's always ran like a sewing machine up until this point. I always take care of it.

Please post the results after filter change. Walmart sells Toyota oil filters cheap.

Yeah i bought it at Walmart. I used the cheap Toyota filter. I always use K&N and this time I didn't and it started doing this.

Simple to change the filter and see what happens.

Wix is a good choice, cheaper than K&N, which is mostly marketing hype anyway.

If that's not a cure, a compression test with a leakdown test is the next practical step.

Alright. I'll try it when I get home and see. It does it slightly at start up. I didn't drive it for a few days and it did the stuff were talking about now. But hasn't done it since.

I thought that may have been from Walmart but didn't want to offend the many members who run them.
Thanks for the heads up

I'll agree with what has already been said. Sounded to me like something where oil isn't in the right place upon startup. I'd start with the new oil filter and maybe even oil and go from there.

Yeah I'm gonna go get the stuff and change it again. I do have another issue with it. The transmission shifts into gear kind of hard and has a slight knocking sound. You can feel the knock through the shifter when holding it.

No. But with my Lisle import filter wrench I've never had the need for one either. :D

Do you have pans under engine etc.?
I do. I can't get filter wrenches to work as effortlessly as socket and extension

It is most likely a scrape in your solenoid cylinder block wall
