What's going on guys- just moved to Grapevine a couple months ago. Got a 2007 6 speed access cab that I'm just starting to get the mod bug for. Big into anything outdoors- hiking, camping, rock climbing, and am itching to find some off-road spots and trails and do some adventuring. Just wanted to say what's up- forgive me if this is the wrong forum for regional talk or to make an introduction.
This is my first truck and 4x4. Truck came with bilstein 5100's all around, but I'm about to pull the trigger on the Headstrong kit and get new bilsteins all around, OME 887's up front w/ LR SPC UCA's, and Dakar's in the back.

You guys think I'll be happy with this set up? Debating on the MD or HD pack. Don't mind a stiff ride, but don't have any weight or armor in the rear right now, though I do haul a trailer or load the bed up heavy once in a while. Maybe getting the HD and removing the 3rd leaf to set aside for now would be the move. Don't have a fully equipped garage like I did back home and I'm no mechanic virtuoso but I have basic tools and am gonna give it a shot myself. If I get myself in too deep and need a hand I'd be generous with beer and pizza for anyone local who knows what they're doing to lend a hand for an afternoon. I know Tandem Automitive is highly reccommended but they wanted about a grand for the install...debating if I should have the pros do it or DIY still.

Mods after that will be a softopper and headlight projector retrofit.

    Have a great weekend!

Welcome. Sounds like a straightforward suspension install. You’ll need an alignment after doing the UCA’s, but everything else can be done in the garage.

Went out and hiked Mount Guadalupe in West Texas earlier this month and camped out in the desert in NM, and recently checked out the beautiful Wichita Mountains in OK. Would love a reccommendation for somewhere I can cut my teeth on some off roading and tie that into some camping/hiking. Got a 11 week old golden retriever I want to take on some adventures and get used to treks and camping etc. I know such places are scarce in DFW but I hear Austin CenTex area has a lot to offer.

Welcome, you’re in the right place. I would stick with the HD pack since you plan on adding to the truck down the road. Many of us are happy to help with installs, just give us a heads up. Any plans for a cab mount chop?

Awesome, that's what I was planning on doing. Wondering if I should take the HD 3rd leaf out and stow it away, or say screw it and install it as is to avoid the hassle later. I can deal with a stiff ride and some rake.
I think I can figure it out with youtube videos and other tutorial/walkthroughs posted here. A little worried I might run into trouble as the the truck and I are from the Northeast if there's rust welded bolts as I only have 1/2 drive ratchets, but we'll see. Good to know I might be able to bribe someone into helping me out or giving advice if I run into something insurmountable!

No plans for CMC- running the 255/75/17 that came with the truck right now- will look at beefier tires when they're spent.

Will get some pics up when I wash the thing.
Anyone have experience with Softoppers? Looking for the final push to rationalize shelling out the $800

What do you guys recommend for rock sliders? I only plan to get into modest off road stuff, and I want 'em more for looks and functionality of a step, though the added protection is nice. Was gonna go for nerf bars but figured might as well spend a little more to get proper sliders.

caliraised has fair pricing, decent design but most importantly, they are local so theres no shipping cost if you pick them up

There’s a ton of vids on YT about any and everything on these trucks. That’s a really great resource. I’d recommend soaking all the bolts that you will be removing with liquid wrench the night before you plan to do the work. Give Em a chance to soak in deep.

Caliraised is local, so you can save freight costs by picking them up.

Removing the leaf might be good until you get some static weight. It’ll still be stiff since your truck is much lighter than a DCSB

Thanks for the recc. and will do.

Can't decide between the Trail Edition https://caliraisedled.com/collectio...s/2005-2020-tacoma-trail-edition-rock-sliders
    Or the Step Edition https://caliraisedled.com/collectio...ts/2005-2020-tacoma-step-edition-rock-sliders
What do you guys think looks best- and in powdercoated black, or coarse bed-liner black?

Good idea. I will always have the leaf to put back in should I need it in the future, and the only weight I have planned is sliders, a soft top, and a bed mat lol. Even if I have to load up a few hundred pounds in the bed, I think the Medium Duties should handle it fine for the odd trip.

Id go powdercoat over bed liner, personal preference. If you have frequent guests or if you need to use the sliders as steps, then go with the fill plates. I opted for no fill plates, easier on the wallet, and lighter.
