Double cabs are for DI2Ks (dual income, 2 kids) who want to look cool in an off-road capable vehicle. And can use it to bring home stuff from the store in the tiny bed in back. Useless for hauling anything longer than 6 feet.
Double cab long beds look ridiculous with their longer wheelbase - kinda like a stretched Taco. The longer wheelbase makes 'em less nimble when going through the woods.

Access cabs rule!
Space (and dry) enough for my toolbox and the dog(s) can still hang in the back.
Discourages the granddaughter from asking if I can take her and a girlfriend somewhere.
Offers convenient space for a trash bag (I will NOT throw stuff out the window like too many other folks).
Wifey almost never goes with me in the Taco anyway (we usually take her Camry).

What's with the preoccupation with lifting anyway?
I read far too many problems with driveline angles screwed up, front end alignments not holding, squeaks & rattles, etc.
I'm happy with the stock height. Gets me into the woods as far as I need to go, and has enough ground clearance for almost any snowstorm.

I'm not an extreme prepper. Don't need to carry all of my survival gear with me 100% of the time. Have a cap on my '06 and will have one on my new '21 TRD OR. Keeps my tools safer when I have to go to a job. Gives me a place to stretch out on an air mattress if I need to take a long trip (too cheap for a hotel if I'm going from point A to point B and not playing tourist).

I can still trick mine out in a more subtle way to make it fit my personality. Never anything that might challenge Toyota's warranty. The little touches - Clazzio leather seat covers, a few letter overlays, black out some trim, custom head & tail lights, etc. If ya don't like it, TFB!

Is “fluid filmed” similar to a rubberized undercoating? Never heard that term before. For rust/corrosion prevention?

 

Not rubberized. If you do a search you'll find plenty of threads. Getting my SX done next week.

Although I have no issues with anyone's preference. You are incorrect about portraying someone with a DC as someone that just wants to look cool. I use my DCSB as a daily driver, often carry family, but also use it as a truck. Today I hauled 1/2 yard of topsoil with the short box. It is the max weight either a SB or AC can carry, and did not completely fill the box. I often go to remote areas loaded with my gear, both in the bed, and back seat, and the roof rack. The extra cab storage space comes in very handy, and with the roof rack I don't have any space issues, even on extended trips, with gear, water, and food for two people. I do agree with you regarding lifts in general, however, a quality off road suspension system is an important component for off road driving, and a lift certainly has it's place if you are rock crawling. For my use, I purchased a used TRD Pro Fox suspension to replace the OEM suspension on my TRD Off-Road for $550. Being tuned specifically for the Tacoma, the ride difference is incredible, however numerous people laughed at me and told me I would regret buying it as it was non adjustable and a poor system to do a lift. I spent a lot of time researching and was honest with what type of driving I do and felt that the suspension would be a great upgrade as most of my off road is unmaintained ranch roads, forestry trails, and mild two tracks, and I really didn't feel I needed a big lift. I have skids and sliders on 265/75 16's E load tires with high clearance bumpers. I am planning on installing a AAD, which will give me a back a little rake, and work with the extra weight I carry when loaded with gear (or hauling topsoil or gravel, lol!). So far I felt I made a good decision, and the DC works for me. BTW, you can also load 4x8 sheets of plywood or 8 ft 2x4's easily in the SB, I have done it many times.

 

My one complaint about the Access cab is the aftermarket support it has compared to the double cab. I know most of everything fits both but it seems like all the racks and fun external mods are for the double cab

 

For those who say an access cab doesn’t have room for groceries, lol.
My Access cab Poverty Package (Utility package) can hold as much, and likely more than your DC. I’ve had it loaded from the floor to the bottom of the back window, about 400 pounds worth of stuff.
And with the 6ft bed and a bed extender and a 1500 lb load capacity it excels. A Lomax tonneau seals the deal.
DCSB is fine for those who have a different mission than mine, mine is to use it as a haul stuff truck.

I’ve heard this argument too many times. Is strategizing how to open and close the doors on an AC something you really had to put IQ towards?
I learned after one time, one single time not to park where it’s cramped, no matter what cab I have. With the AC I bought a cargo net for the box, pop the closest tonneau panel to the tailgate open and load.
So. Damn. Simple.

And a bed extender folded in also makes a great “cargo net”. Far easier than unloading from the cab regardless of AC or DC.
