After stumbling upon a near-new TRD Pro Fox setup locally via Craigslist, I’m lucky enough to have two sets of shocks to choose from to install on my 2020 OR. I have no plans to run 33s or anything, so don’t need much of a lift. I do wheel every so often being out west, but nothing advanced. Interested in better ride quality as well - in comparison to the stock OR shocks. My intent is to install one set and sell the other.

Help me decide. Which setup would you install? And why?

    1. Bilstein 6112 / 5160 (on clips 2/3)
    2. TRD Pro Fox

What’s your rationale in that recommendation?

my 5100’s were leaking after 3 years. Would the oem setup from fox have to meet higher quality standards? No idea

Someone will pay a premium for the OEM, Bilstein’s are less sexy. It’s the smarter move, IMO.

Why did you buy the 6112’s? Didn’t you research and decide on them?

I did research, but got a great deal on the Fox setup, so figured why not. Now just trying to make the final decision.

New Bilsteins will likely last a lot longer than the used foxes. I was looking for a set if fox takeoffs like that but decided to wait until I can afford new fox 2.5 or kings.

The Fox’s have almost no miles on them.

I'm just a guy on the internet but my little brother works at a custom shop and said they've been getting quite a few customers in the last 2 years who have been swapping out their fox suspension due to surprisingly fast deterioration.

He only told me this because I told him I was in the market and he told me stay away from Fox for that reason. He is in a northern Midwest state that gets a lot of snow but I figure I'd just add my anecdote since you're asking internet stranger's opinions

So you could probably make a little cash selling the fox setup

I have the 6112/5160 Bilstein setup with Dakar HD leafs and it was head and shoulders above the stock TRD Offroad Bilsteins. I love it, does great controlling bumps, and smooth. Worth the investment. Haven't ridden in a truck with the Foxes, so can't compare.

TRD Pro suspension with Headstrong 3 Leaf AAL, DV8 OR front slimline bumper & Engine Skid Plate, RCI OR high clearance bumper, CaliRaised Trail Edition Sliders, Spidertrax 1.25" Wheel Spacers, 265/75 16 GY Duratracs, wrapped the OEM wheels, OR Roof Rack, Extang Exceed Hard top Tri fold tonneau.
You will have more flexibility with the Bilsteins, however, the Fox TRD Pros were tuned specifically for the Tacoma and handle very well. I would have probably gone another way except that I got a killer deal on a used set of TRD Pro Fox ($550). I spent a lot of time researching and was honest with what type of driving I do and felt that the suspension would be a great upgrade as most of my off road is unmaintained ranch roads, forestry trails, and mild two tracks and I really didn't feel I needed a big lift. I have skids and sliders on 265/75 16's with high clearance bumpers. I am planning on installing a AAD, which will give me a back a little rake, and work with the extra weight I carry when loaded with gear. So far I felt I made a good decision.

I stay go 6100s and sell oem pro shocks. You get more adjustability with the 6100s and the oem pros are overpriced for what they are.

I was applying my experience with the brand (bilstein) to your dilemma. Stating my bilsteins didn’t impress me with longevity. Take it as you wish
