How to: DIY Wedge Camper

I just extruded 2.5in squares. Didn’t need to make them hollow personally

 

Did you use bolts to mount the stiffeners? Someone mentioned just epoxying them,m

Thanks for this video. Now it makes more sense how to work in Fusion for me.

 

use the splitting tool to cut the excess away (well remove from sketch, dont delete)

and then you might be able to extend the extrusion

But I just made a bunch of 1.5" sticks and learned how to use a plane on two edges

I'll make a few screen casts to share what I learned from someone else. Like he drew the entire thing up in 15 minutes where my slow self took about an hour to make the top and bottom frames...

Will not use actual dimensions since the spaceframe plans are a paid thing.

 

I used the rivets specified in the materials list. I wouldn’t epoxy them, if you damage a door, you can salvage the stiffeners off it by just drilling out the rivets.

**I am not a Fusion 360 power user by any means, just sharing what I learned with this project. I have some prior experience with Solidworks and Inventor**

Also how do you end up finding all your angles you need to cut on the miter saw? Just the measure tool?

 

Also, to make the top into separate sticks you can just miter the corners in Fusion. Just make a plane at an angle, change it 45° so it's across the top from the outside to the inside corner and split the body.

Well it only took me the better part of 3 hours to get here but at least Im pretty comfortable now in Fusion 360. So once you get here how do you determine what angles to set the compound miter at?

This is what I figured out in the last 3 days. How do I use the fold flat feature to print templates?

 

What I did was make the body a surface. Then unstitch. Then you can create a flat pattern. Then you can create a dxf file from that and use a dxf program to then create a pdf with the correct dimensions.

This was the only way I could figure out how to make a template that was the correct size. I pieced it together with multiple 8.5x11's. We will see how it goes.

We are getting there


Anxious to get it on the truck! I think the door files are maybe a 1/4 inch too tall for a 1st Gen, but we will see. They stick past the bottom of the frame when closed. Luckily however, the frame is right at the edge of the bed rails, so it should not be a problem with how the bed side slopes down and away quickly.

If I had to do it again, I’d probably modify the door files slightly and move the latch holes up. Still could, new doors would only be $185, so def not the end of the world. We will see how it works out in real life once it’s on.

 

looks awesome! if you need to shave off the excess of the door a plane tool works perfectly with this material. I'm curious how are you going to put it on the truck? After finding out how much the extrusions weight I'm really dreading for that day...

 

Did anyone find a way put on some locking latches? or a lock on the tent?

 

I used locking Jeep hood latches on mine. They took a bit of modifying but they work great.
