I only hear them at slow speeds or coming to a stop. Above 50km/hr they aren’t really any louder than non studded winters I’ve run.

 

On ice or dry pavement?

 

OP you'll want regular lug nuts, the alloy lugs corrode when exposed and they also don't have the correct chamfer for the steel rims. They are intended for temp use with the spare.

 

Dry pavement. I expected them to be much noisier, I was pleasantly surprised.

 

With the Blizzak DM-V2s, I rarely engage 4WD except to keep the system lubricated. Could have bought a 2WD truck.

Hakkas are probably even better but $$$. Also look at Swedish and Norwegian winter tire tests using Google Translate.

 

I find the tacoma so light that in residential packed snow it doesnt matter what tire you have even with 300lbs and studded I struggled.

Ive gotten to the point where I just use 4x4 if I cant see pavement so it drives like it has pretend awd.

 

Weird. My truck has the good transmission, maybe it drives different for that reason. Truck is 5000 lb, it's not light! I learned to drive on a Delta 88 with bias ply tires in the winter, that helps too.

 

Maybe I'm just impatient haha. Calgary is a different animal.

I had never used studs until I got my Tacoma, but I don’t think I would ever not have them on a rear wheeled drive which are mostly truck now. I used to have a 2500HD diesel, thinking back the stud would have been nice. I generally drive without 4x4 in the city in both yyc and anc including the Alcan/Alaska highway. ANC do not gravel or salt their roads generally.

Yep. I bought a set of steel lug nuts with the rims but they are the wrong size so I’m swapping them out this week.

 

Just got my new Yokohama’s on yesterday. I’m also in the “Nokians are too expensive” and “I don’t like studs” crowd.

 

Anyone know where to get hub caps to cover just the nuts and center. I would prefer to keep the salt and crap out for the winter. Stock size 265/65 R17 on a 2019 TRD Sport.

 

I just ordered Nokian Hakka R3’s for only $7 more per tire compared to blizzaks and x-ices. But I’ll always advocate that even the cheapest off brand dedicated winter tire is better than the top of the line all season. (Not calling your Yokohama’s cheap or off brand lol)

 

Haha! Im sure you are a bit sarcastic, but where i live(lower mainland) it barely snows. Maybe for a month out of the year. It mostly just rains all fall and winter. When i want lots of snow, i go to the mountains.

 

Haha. No worries. I might buy them, but I buy my tires with Canadian Tire money. The Yokohama’s cost me the price of install only. No Nokians at the CT though.

 

It's a a nice utilitarian look. I say run them just like that.
