I don’t know what the registration fees are for electric cars in California, maybe I’ll go on the DMV website estimate page and look later, but not only does California usually have tax incentives for “green vehicles” but you also get to use the HOV lane as well (you get a special tag through a lottery system). I feel like electric cars should be taxed or have higher license fees because they wear and tear the road just like any other vehicle. What would be really nice is if we had a mileage tax (there is no way that would ever work out fairly with how dysfunctional California is) but in a perfect world it would be nice to pay less for the vehicles I use less and pay my fair share for my commuter car that I use more. But, who cares because I’m leaving this state in a year anyway.

What state are you going to?

My wife got a federal job in San Francisco two years ago - an amazing job. She went out there for about a year on her own (I stayed home with the kids) and we went out there monthly to visit and look at schools and housing. After about four months we KNEW we could not do it! The place is absolutely disgusting and filthy. My god, the scenery is amazing there but...I will stop there.

Idaho, nobody get angry either, we’re the Californians you want.

I won’t get into it either but the homelessness is just out of this world. We live in a coastal “yuppy” town and the trash, human waste and literally needles are in no short supply. Few weeks ago I saw a guy dropping a duce into a fast food cup in plain sight. If you make 250k a year where I live you literally can’t buy a normal home less than an hour from work. I’m not going to get into it but let’s just say this place doesn’t represent my values and between the homeless and crazy drivers I wouldn’t let me kids ride their bike places like I did growing up here. And I’m not old either!

Exactly! She rented a place on California on one of the cable car lines in Nob Hill. Broken car windows, streets smell like piss and shit. Garbage everywhere. In the evenings she'd research suburbs like Walnut Creek and a couple others. But the commute on BART was disgusting. Traffic was impossible.

Good luck in Idaho. I hear a lot of people are fleeing CA, the tax base is going to dwindle. It will get ugly.

Fortunately, she can transfer to a milder climate in 2021 - we are looking at AZ, NV, TX or HI. One thing I was really blown away about, is how much friendlier people from the midwest are.

S.F. Bay Area definitely has a homeless crisis that’s exponentially out of control. Most of these homeless are shipped here from other states because S.F. had the resources to help these people. Once the faucet opened about 15 years ago we received way way too many. Then the housing crisis, drug crises, etc etc. I wish there was an easy answer because I love S.F. and will never leave the bay. Just over the Golden Gate Bridge is a different story entirely. I can’t remember the last time I locked my front door.

Shoot, I didn’t want to hijack the thread. But yeah, there are lots of great places here still. Personally I’d rather leave and have the life style my family and I want but I’d still love to visit here often. It’s just a multitude of things, traffic, taxes, the homeless situation in most of the cities, plus the nanny laws just get old. Between the bag laws, straw bans and other nanny laws, the last straw was my old city took away all the single family home rolling garbages and replaced them with smaller ones, and one half is for table scraps only. It’s the same city where they let homeless remain on sidewalks plus give them portable toilets and garbage service (and the homeless get the normal trash cans they took away from the single family home tax payers, go figure).

On a side note for all the folks paying various registration fees, how’s the roads and overall infrastructure in your state? I will say Utah has some damn nice roads when I drove through there one time.
