Not much so far. There’s a couch and a sleeping platform and a spare tire.

    The sleeping platform-
It’s 2 epoxy fiberglass over foam panels. They’re 24”x46” and weigh 9 pounds each.
They took 50 hands on hours to build and aren’t finished.

Mojave desert I did not need it, I also like to see the start nights, now that its winter I'm putting it back on.

Yeah, I just did 3500 miles from San Jose south to Mojave Preserve then AZ, NM, UT, NV and back to SJ.
I only wished I’d had the tent a couple times.
Luckily I had a -5F mummy bag I can stuff into my 20 degree rectangle bag. I also have a 12v electric blanket and enough battery to last a long long time....like days.

    I’ll miss the unobstructed views.

Mojave preserve is one of my favorite places.
I love your build, if I had it to do over again that would be my route.

    Thanks!
It’s been a super fun project.
There are things I’d change and sometimes I miss how light my truck used to be. But it’s not my daily driver so it works well.

I remember talking to a guy with a Comanche who had one of these. He said he drove from Colorado to Cali to pick it up or something and got it for like $600. Obviously with the current trend for small truck campers that would be almost impossible nowadays. From what I remember it was pretty much just a shell inside (no appliances), and the cabover part isn't a bed, just storage. I assume they dont make these any more but there's a company called Bel Air who makes something very similar:

Thanks for the reply. I was trying to see the name on the first one, but I wouldn’t be surprised that the company went out of business. I’m very familiar with Bel Air; I had one of their shells on my last truck (Ford F250) that I actually found used. They’re heavy for their size, but certainly well made and more like a camper than a typical shell.

I found one of those campers.

I'm so glad you did this, I have questions!!

1 how donyou allow for the flex between the cab and the camper. It looks like the bed mounts on bushings and the camper hard mounts.

2 did you cur the cab out? How did you support it.

3 how did you attach the metal cab to the fiberglass and seal it?

4 how much weight didnit add?

5 did you reinforce the axle?

6 how does it feel to be so awwsome?

I really liked the Vagabond Drifter set up on my 2003 DCSB. Now it's on my 2nd gen, because the Vagabond is designed to work on all generations of Tacomas with a small change to the seal on the rear window to fit the giant 3rd gen, EPA-approved tailgate fin.

I am an admirer as well. If I lived in SoCal, I would have a 1st gen manual 4 cylinder built up like that (without a supercharger) - able to run off watery 85 octane at sea level and just cruise around Baja every other weekend.
