Did you know that a rifle with a pistol grip, mags that can hold more than 10 rounds and flash suppressors make the owner of the rifle more likely to commit a crime with it compared to rifles without those things?

And the bayonet lugs....WOW if you don't miss when you aren't next to them, you'll at least have a knife on the end to stab the person with.

When "the day comes" it's too late. Reload everything you'd expect to need now and then stock up on the components to replace it all as needed. Be sure to store it all carefully. Surplus military ammo cans are perfect and will keep your ammo safe 50+ years. (When breaking ground for a new building at Camp Fogarty they found some ammo that had been buried in the 40's The cans were rusty but the ammo inside was in great shape... That armor piercing 30.06 was almost as accurate as match ammo :D)

If you're going to wait on any of this stock up on primers first. Primers would be the most easily controlled component because they contain an actual explosive. They could be restricted to purchase only by licenced explosives experts. Something along those lines was once proposed locally.

I have no doubt that he would sign any gun control measure that makes it to his desk.

I had an older coworker who thought that private citizens had no need for anything other than hunting guns. I used to go right to the range from work and had brought in a newly purchased (cheap Chinese) SKS complete with long pointy folding bayonet. He asked to see it and we got into the gun control debate at one point the he yelled "What the hell do you need a bayonet for!" and I calmly replied "To pick up litter that blows onto my lawn." He stared at me for a long few seconds and then we both burst out laughing.
    ______________________________

"Assault rifle" legislation is window dressing. By definition an real assault rifle is capable of selective fire and as such already falls under the requirements of a class 3 federal machine gun licence to possess.

Back in the 80's when I was competing I bought a Colt AR-15A2 H-Bar and an Springfield M1A Super Match which except for having heavy barrels and an over sized stock on the M1A are identical to the M16A-2 and the M-14 with the exception of the ability of firing bursts/full auto.

Then the "Assault Rifle" ban was passed. People were buying anything they could find and prices went through the roof. I never considered selling the M1A but I almost took the $3000 cash for the AR I had only paid $650 for....

It didn't take long for Colt to start selling the AR15 Sporter which had no flash suppressor and no bayonet lug. Springfield only had to remove the bayonet lug to make their M1A meet the "No more than 2" of the "assault rifle" characteristics rule. Prices went back to almost pre ban prices and everyone got back to shooting.

The time line is a little fuzzy but it wasn't very long after the ban went into effect that FBI statistics were released showing that "assault rifles" has been used in less than 1/10th of 1% of the crimes they investigated in the previous 10 years. The ban was allowed to lapse because it caused no detectable drop in gun crime.

SKS is the best, cheap beginners rifle. you can get one for under a 100$ and you can make them automatic if you know how. Plus 7.62mm rounds are great for everything. but sadly the only gun im gonna buy is probly going to be a 22.cal. i just want something to shoot rabitts and small game at my house.

I disagree. The only admirable quality of the SKS was price. Other than that it's a horrible rifle. Ugly, the parts that aren't stamped are poorly machined. By far the hardest pull (So hard I double checked that the safety was off.) and worse feeling trigger I've ever touched on a gun and finally it barely holds a 6" group at 100 yds with good quality ammo from a bench rest. I'd sell it but I wouldn't wish that thing on anyone I like enough to sell a gun to.

Converting it to full auto has it's own set of problems. Simple if you're just filing certain parts not so simple if you want selective fire and reliability. Either way is one of the cheapest ways you can earn a long stay at the federal inn.

IMHO stick with a decent quality .22 In the long time you'll have a lot more fun and a lot less trouble.

I'll tell you mine has non of those problems. it is an extremely smooth firing rifle and accurate as hell at a hundred yards.

I'll go out on a limb here and guess that you didn't buy one of the $100 surplus Chinese ones :D

I'm curious... How accurate? I have shooting friends ranging from considering able to hit a beer can at 25 yds accurate to bench rest shooters who measure 100 yd 5 shot groups in hundreths of an inch.

:D no my father bought it quite a few years ago an paid much more than $100 has the bayonet on it. Not one that is cut off from China. Last time I shot it from roughly 100 yrds I kept it within an inch grouping.. now I don't go shooting that much but I think that's pretty damn good for that gun when the owner isn't a marksman.

Nice. A 1 MOA group is good enough for almost anything you'll ever need to do. If the AK I own were half that accurate I'd work the trigger and at least use it for plinking.
I used to hold sub half inch groups with both my AR 15 and M1A with iron sights from a bench using good ammo. With a scope mounted on the AR I could get 3/16" to 1/4" groups firing 52 gr match kings. Not shabby for an "assault rifle". :D

Did you know that an intruder confronted by a man holding a rifle equipped with a pistol grip, 30 rd box, flash suppressor and bayonet secured to the end of his rifle by the bayonet lug is probably going to tuck his tail between his legs, piss and sh*t himself?

I've got an SKS, a Russian one. 1953. Everything on the rifle is milled, there are few, if any, stamped parts. Gorgeous wood, a deep red hue, with a folding blade bayonet. Shoots like a dream. I did pay more than $100 for it when I bought it, between $300-400.

I do think the cheap ones, the Chinese made ones and the Viets are crude and aren't worth owning.

I personally like the Marlin .22's in bolt action. The 882 is a good choice in my book.
As for maker, you will get alot of info on who's best and who blows and vice versa.
Head to a shop and say you want to look at .22's. Get a feel for what you want. May have a set of rings if you find something.....no cost :D

seems to me that it would benefit the gun & ammo manufacturers to create a "gun scare". they have warehouses full of this stuff that used to be legal, then wasn't, now is, and may go back to being illegal. if i was Bushmaster and i had 100,000 AR's and there was a possibility of a ban on them, i would want to sell them as quickly as possible. adding fuel to the fire on the "weapons ban" will do just that, as evidenced by the previous posts of people "stocking up".

in my opinion, they will go after the handguns if anything...but they will put a bunch of "riders" on it to cover semi-autos, and high cap mags. a handgun is what paralized mr. Brady, the namesake of the infamous "Brady Bill".

i own a few guns...nothing crazy. mini-14 (should've bought a mini-30), 10-22, Baby Eagle, 870, 882 .22 mag., Sig Mosquito, and an NEF 20ga. i bought them all new, and they are all registered in my name.

it kills me that people think a "ban" on certain guns will make everything all better. i'm not too worried about this situation, becase i already have all the guns i will ever need. although, i have been playing with the idea of a "zombie killer" shotgun...probably a Mossy 500 in the near future. i think a 12ga is still your best option in a post apocoliptic environment.

I don't think they'll try to go after handguns in any sort of "blanket" sense, that was recently struck down by SCOTUS in the Heller case.....which, unfortunately, left the door open in a fairly vague way for governmental restrictions. A blanket handgun ban would not stand.

If they do anything it'll be a nibbling away process, reinstitute an invigorated version of the AWB, ban 11+ round mags again, make private sales of guns illegal (all sales or gifts would have to go through a licensed dealer), ban 50 caliber rifles, that sort of thing.

If you were wanting to get an "assault rifle" you may now be too late.....for a while anyway until the current scare wears off. Actually, I think Barak is a pretty smart guy. He saw what happened to the Dems in '94, and also how AlGore lost the presidency in Y2K......not because of SCOTUS or Florida as so many would claim, but because he lost his home-state of Tennessee because of his stance on gun-control. If he'd won Tennessee then Florida wouldn't have mattered, would have been irrelevant, he'd have been POTUS, period. Barak knows that, and so do a lot of Dems in Congress. They'd be idiots to go after guns again, it'd kill 'em in '10, but hard to say, they may not be able to resist and the gun-control proponents are going to be hard on them to do so during the next two years partly as pay-back, and partly because they may never have a better chance than now to get it done. It'll be interesting to see.

Assault rifles, ARs, M1As, etc, are almost unobtainable around here right now. A month ago there were racks and racks of them in any gun-store, often on sale. Not now. If you waited until now, you waited too long.
