Nothing is wrong it's how the computer limits speed based of rpm. I used tuning software to govern out at 300mph and removed throttle restrictions so I don't have an issue anymore. Took awhile to figure out. Try pulling past that speed in 4th gear. It shouldn't limit in 4th gear.

I did try on 4th gear. I couldn't drive past 78mph all this time. Should i get OVTune?

Asking for help. Is that what you had to do? Did everybody in this thread who got 5.29's had to get an OV Tune if they want to go over 78 ~ 80mph?? I remember asking this thread for advice before getting my gears. This is just GREAT :(. I honestly didn't know I had to shell out another $700 bucks after getting the new gears to unlock my top speed. Seriously thank you for telling me. No matter how much I step on the gas pedal, and rev upto 5500 after 79mph, only thing my truck would do is make more noise, but never goes past 79mph. In 4th gear 79mph is very high rpms (around 5k), 6th gear 79mph at 2900 rpm.
Just to clarify, if anybody (read as not me) with a new taco re-geared their truck to 5.29's on 33s~35s, their stop speed is limited by the computer based on the rpm to around 78~mph?
And if they desire to go faster, they have to get an OV Tune? Or go back to stock? Did I understand correctly?

I dont know but no way you got your truck up to 120 as proclaimed.

In my case, both instances were while passing someone and downhill.

VF Tuners (ov tune) will let other people tune you for less and you don't have to sit and try and figure things out. I'll link the thread when I find it.

Great. Now calling me a liar for asking for advice here and giving my observations. I could say the same about your 92 mph on 5.29s and 35s. 120 was on a bone stock truck years ago. 79mph now on 529s.

Something must be wrong, because when I hit 79 mph, the flux-capacitor kicks in, and I'm blasted into a different time zone. :notsure:

All joking aside, I was recommended by ECGS to install 4:88's for my DCLB4x4 on 33's with full armor. It seems overkill that your 2x4 with 33's is on 5:29's. I understand all the love for 5:29's, but the top speed limiter was a deal breaker for me (OVTune feature wasn't out at the time). Have you spoke with ECGS on this?

    Did they suggest 5:29's?

Or, did you request them because of folks here on TW?

FWIW, I'm sure you'll appreciate the additional throttle control and shift behaviors that come with OVTune.

No. I knew some speed limitation was expected with regearing. What I didn't know was that I'd go from 120mph max speed to 78mph max speed.
This was a learning experience. I also didn't realize how often I went over 80.
    No
Yes, I came here with the question about which gears. Was suggested 5.29's, and on the other thread too. Said I'd see better shift responses, pickup at lower speeds etc. *(which I do)

Can you please answer this, because Chadr7858 isn't answering, and I am trying to understand the issue with my truck and trying to fix it, while everybody here is enjoying with their jabs and puns.

    1. Did everybody in this thread who got 5.29's had to get an OV Tune if they want to go over 78 ~ 80mph?? Or is this a problem unique to my truck only. *(The only mods on my stock tacoma is 33s and 529s)
    2. If anyone with a new taco re-geared their truck to 5.29's on 33s~35s tires, are their top speed is limited by the computer based on the rpm to around 78~mph?
    3. if anyone geared to 529 desire to go faster than 78/79mph, do they absolutely have to get an OV Tune? Or go back to stock? Am I understanding correctly?

    1. Most don't drive that fast. lol
    2. Typically.
    3. OVTune or 4:88's :notsure: (or 4:30 or 4:56 per here)

    Thank you.
So all those people here in this thread on 33s with 5.29s who are getting speeds over 100mph without a tune were bullshitting all along.
Thanks for clarifying and putting it to rest. @Hooligans , there is your answer. On 3rd gens, if we re-gear to 529's on 33 size wheels, we are limited to 78mph typically.

    1. Everyone is limited around there I'm surprised yours is as low as 78 min was about 82-83 which equated to 89 on 33s and over 90 with 35s. But yes this is a known "problem" with 5.29s

    2. Mine's a 2019 so I'm going to say yes.

    3. Yeah that's the option than I know. Note: off the shelf ovtune did NOT remove my speed limiter. My own tune that I made with OVTunes software is what removed the limiter. PS note: many people reported that OVTunes off the shelf tune DID remove the speed limiter. If you buy his stuff you can edit the tune and remove the speed limiter.

Remember your GPS speed is faster than your speedometer speed because of your bigger tires.

I just did some maths stock speed limiter is 173kph which equals 107mph now if you do some math and ratio and stuff the difference between 3.91 and 5.29 would make the speed limiter hit at 79mph. That's right I'm a genius.

Just finished my break on period and changed out the rear diff fluid. I have 5.29 gears with 35’s got it up to 86mph on gps before backing off the throttle. No tune, just the Hypertech speedometer recalibrator.

Damn I’ve never really viewed my speed or even gave it a second thought as I was super happy with the upgrade until I was told that I had a limiter! Now I have to go out and drive faster than normal and try to piss myself off!

@Onemo - did you do the calibrator due to 35’s?

I have 35’s on my FJ and was thinking of swapping as they are KM3’s!
