Anyone know what the best A/T tire is that has minimal road noise?

I have a 2018 Tacoma XSP which has the 17 inch XD beadlock wheels and Good Year Wranglers (265/65/17) w/ about 20,000 miles and the road noise is quite loud. I'm from Miami so I don't see myself taking this truck on any crazy off road trips that would require anything aggressive. I want to go up in tire size as well.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

I'm on my second set of 265/75/16 Toyo ATII's in P-rating and haven't noticed any road noise over the stock 245s that came on it. These are great tires as well, have had them in a myriad of conditions.

Welcome to TW. Unfortunately tire threads and oil threads almost always turn to shit. Everyone usually just says get this or that because that’s what I have.
I will comment on one tire that I’ve had 3 sets of on different vehicles. At least check out Hercules Terra Trac II AT’s made by Cooper tires. They are AT’s but the quietest AT’s I’ve experienced. They come with a 60000 mile warranty. They are excellent off road and on the pavement. They are outstanding in the rain and on wet roads. Also you’ll find them a little less $$$ than other AT’s.

Hankook Dynapro ATM’s weren’t too bad when I had them.

something like a Michelin LTX AT2 might be your best bet though.

Toyo AT II's and Cooper Discoverer AT3's are both pretty quiet. I've had both in load range C.

Michelin AT2’s are by far the quietest AT tires I’ve ridden on. It also comes with a 60,000 mile warranty if that matters to you. For reference I’ve run every generation of BFG AT, nitto terra grapplers, original version Goodyear wrangler Kevlars and original falken wildpeaks.

Everyone has a different preference though.

I am with the poster who points out most tire threads slide into chaos ... But, hey, I love a good tire conversation. Never gets old. If you don't, feel free to just move along ... plenty of other things to post about.

I love the Nitto tires. I am on my third set. But I do some off roading and I suspect they would not be the best fit for you. I've found them to be quiet but that is just me. Also, just because I like them doesn't mean that they are the best, the one and the only!

For the kind of driving you are doing, you can never go wrong with a set of Michelin's. Always a solid choice.

Take a look at this little post on Tire Buyer where they list a few of the AT tires that rate high in being quiet. That might help:
    https://www.tirebuyer.com/education/quiet-off-road-tire

Honestly, though, this is a pretty subjective kind of thing. What is quiet to me may not be quiet to you. Here is where a good local tire shop can help. Worth asking them for their opinion since they probably have a lot of experience with a wider range of tires than most of us and have heard a lot more feedback.

Best of luck in your search and please post what ever you decide so we can all learn from your experience ...

Thank you all so much. You guys have been really helpful....I'm new to this truck thing - - was always the sports car guy and had no issues with buying tires there!

    Thanks again.

I've had good luck with the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S and the Goodyear Wrangler with Kevlar that come on the TRD OR/Pro 3rd gens. I don't mind either, but the AT3 is slightly more aggressive and comes with more tread.

    back to bone stock.
i am running the Cooper Disco AT3 4S tires right now. they are pretty quiet. my initial off road camping trips were pretty undramatic. no issue.

having said this. my past tires were the Michelins LTX LT3 (or something like that) from Costco. a wonderful tire!! super long lasting and quiet!! only reason i am running the Coopers was that i had a hunting trip coming up, needed new tires and the Michelins were out of stock damn near everywhere. they are still backordered at Costco. been backordered for a year!!

I've owned the OEM Dunlop GrandTreks, Bridgestone Revo 2's, Goodyear Adventure Kevlars, Hankook Dynapro ATM's, Yokohama Geolander AT's, and Cooper Discovery AT4s.

The Hankook Dynapro's were the quietest until they went out of balance, then they sounded like any other AT's. Just make sure you get the Hankook Dynapro's rotated/balanced every 5k miles and you'll be happy. I got 80K miles out of mine before needing replacing.

My Hankook Dynapro ATM's and Cooper AT3's both were nice and quiet and gripped well for all of the first 10-15k miles... after that noise went up SIGNIFICANTLY and traction dropped off like a rock in anything but dry conditions.

Would not recommend, and honestly unless you really need the AT tire for mud or deep snow go with a proper tire like the Micheline defender LTX M/S

Actually if you aren’t going to off road you really don’t need AT’s. Just find yourself a good set of “truck” tires

If you don’t off-road get Michelin Defenders.

If you want the AT tire with the best road manners get Michelin AT2.

If you’re buying a tire for looks, buy the tire you like the look of.

Little this. Little that 4x4 Swap’d PreRunner
As mentioned, if no plans for off road then find a good all season street truck tire like the at3 4S’s or the Michelin LT3’s. If you’re looking for off road ability, the AT3 XLTs or the Toyo ATII’s or similar would work fine and have quiet treads

I'm on my 4th set of Nitto Terra Grapplers. I've had one set on a Chevy 1500HD, 2 sets on a GMC 2500 HD, and now on my Tacoma. Very minimal road noise. No more than stock tires. Next time I will go Nitto Ridge Grapplers.

As others have mentioned - the Hankook Dynapro ATM are pretty quiet on these trucks. I have a set of them (P metric) as well as some goodyear duracraps (LT load range C) that I swap out depending on my needs.

I ran the Michelin LTX A/T2's on my duramax and they were quiet and performed well, so I would expect them be equally impressive on the Taco.
