OBD2 Scanner Questions

I don't currently have any problems with my 2020, but I thought that this might be a good thing to have 'just in case'.

Is this a good one?

All I really wish to do at this time is confirm what version ECU I have on my truck.

Not a chance. Buy a cheap ELM327 clone. Mine is over 6yrs old that I bought for $15. Works perfectly with Torque, OBD Fusion, and Carista.

If I was buying today, I would grab the Carista adapter:

$30 and comes with a free month of full subscription access. That means accessing the dealer Customizations like seat belt chimes, TPMS programming, turn signal flashes, etc.

The adapter works with other apps. Both OBD Fusion and Carista will tell you the ECU ID.

Yes. Those are the apps that I am familiar with and get discussed a lot around here. You need an app to pair with the OBD adapter.

They all have a free version and a paid component. Torque and OBD Fusion are one time costs. Carista has a subscription with varying prices.

 

What do you want the tool to do? If all you want to do is check basic codes, there are FAR cheaper options. If you want to pull ABS, Trans and SRS codes, than you'll need something a little more robust, and if you want manufacturer-specific codes, something even more involved. This one seems to indicate it does a lot, but I'm not familiar with it, and in my experience, a lot of these generic units don't do what they claim. My preference is for the Autel or Launch lines.

 

Just a note my cheapie works perfectly with the Toyota PIDs in OBD Fusion. I recently found one that might help with the MT DFCO problem?

Makes sense; almost all scan tools work well with some, and less so (or not at all) with others. This is why pros have 3, 4, 5 or more high-end (>$5K) tools. My box has three, ranging from a $300 Innova to a $1500 Launch 431.

On that side, the Tactrix adapter has been doing killer work for me there with TechStream, FORScan, and OVT. I've been tempted to play with ECUFlash on our Subaru, but the VVT has been an odd puppy on it. So, I'm just leaving it alone.

Have fun and test drive the different OBD apps when you get a chance. Besides check engine help down the road, you can get some very useful info with a bit of time spent setting up the available gauges. There are threads here for the apps and setup help.
