OBD2 Scanner Questions

That's a good question. I don't have the OR / Pro electric boost, so I can't get familiar. But, I recall that you guys are able to do that without an OBD tool?

Reads the Toyota platform very well for what it is

 

And I assume that this one also reads the ECU ID?

Correct.... calibration identifications (CID) on the scan tool is the ECU ID in my case in the pic provided earlier 04B04

Yes, I did see that. I just wanted to make certain that this one also would read the ECU ID, since the Scanner in the earlier pic is no longer available.

I prefer a dedicated handheld unit over an App on my Phone, so I decided to go with this one. And it is small enough that I can just keep it in the glove box.

If I did go with an App on my Phone, then I'd go with the Carista App:

It is great that we have all these choices. I hated the days when I had to borrow the OBD scanner at the parts store then try to figure out what was up in their parking lot.

Having the power in your hands, no matter how you get there, is good stuff.

I won't talk much to hardware, BUT I will say this: some of these work only with android/only with apple phones. You might think "Of course I have an iphone, I won't have anything else, I'll get the apple one!"

Then. A few years later, your workplace switches from apple to android, and you now have an android phone. And you can't connect to the device with your phone without keeping an old one plugged in, charged and updated just in case you need to run codes sometime in the future.

Mine was visa-versa, I had an android and then work landed me with iphones. I still have my old android phone, so it works, BUT get something that's "universal", nothing that's specific to a certain type of phone or operating system.

I personally use this, plus Torque Pro on my android, and an app called "Car Scanner" on ios.

 

Hope regular updates are available, which is why I prefer Autel.

 

You need a bi-directional scan tool for this, not a simple DTC reader. You're going to need to hit probably at least the $500 level for a decent bi-directional tool.

 

I'll start the bidding at $170.

Sure, give it a whirl. It might work... I wouldn't bet the farm on it though. There's a reason that I spent $1500 on mine, and pay ~$400/year for software updates. There's an even better reason why professional mechanics can have $50-75K invested in scan tools and spend north of $500/month on software updates.
