I can't wait to see how the MAX performs on the road!!!

Just brainstorming here. I don't know what chip Milwaukee uses for their "TrueView" led lights. But I love them for working on my truck/cars. Would it be possible to use those chips in a platform like the SS3 or SSC2? I know the color temp of the led isn't flashy or popular but the color rendering is pretty amazing! I would think it would be extremely good for poor weather and dusty situations.

Not SAE, but here is the SS3 combo which combines half Driving and half Flood, as tested in the Pros. The flood optic will benefit substantially more from the increased output of the Pros vs the increased focus of the Sports. Increased focus with smaller emitters (like the Sport) is primarily beneficial in a focused optic, and a distributed flood optic is the opposite of that. In flood, more lumen output wins over improved focus, so for this optic I would recommend the Pro or the Max.

    The Combo optic
    1C8D9E22-0F75-4622-8867-4CF254E9A146.jpg

Trivial in relative placement really, but you want a driving optic to be as high as possible, so it makes sense the driving optic would be on top and the flood on bottom.

Driving vs Driving & Flood combo

    SAE Driving pattern

    Combo Driving and Flood pattern
    CBA8E311-B6FF-4E25-A02E-FCF99250ADF1.jpg

As one would expect the driving hot spot isn't quite as intense in combo and there is a lot more light everywhere else outside of the dedicated driving pattern, with a smoother distributed pattern vs the highly focused driving only pattern.

    9FC7F815-ED97-48B7-9152-73E8A5F2F964.jpg

So the combo optic takes approximately a 44% loss in peak intensity over a dedicated driving pattern optic, which makes sense since half the pod is now a lower intensity flood pattern. It isn't that less light is being produced, just rather than concentrating it for distance projection vs it being distributed to flood a much larger area at lower intensity. Combo patterns are typically best suited for off road use, where you want to combine a flood light for near field trail illumination with improved far field distance illumination. On the trail at night, or even forest service roads, a broad flood pattern can be beneficial, but for dedicated street use a driving pattern is typically more appropriate.

Looks like that combo lens will be great for ditch light mounts. More punch than the flood alone offers, giving them more utility in more open trails.

    Appreciate the test, Crash.

That would be a good use as long as you have the light angled far enough to the ditch that the flood doesn't overly illuminate the hood. For ditch lights I personally like lower profile lights like the SSC2, which are also available with a combo lens, obviously not the same output level as the SS3 though.

DD keeps on making my decisions harder and harder on wants/needs! Living where I do and the roads I mostly drive, I don't really need more than the sports. BUT the Pros and Max are looking really enticing.

@memario1214 any chance selective yellow max and/or combo optics will be available for pre-order at BF pricing?

I CAN confirm that the selective yellow max (FYI only available as an SAE fog pattern as of now) will be eligible for pre-order during the BF window. As for the combo optics - No promises there. I know that Ryland has them in hand, but DD hasn't officially released that pattern yet.

No. The LEDs the Max uses are only available in color temps around 5500-6000k.

The Max only comes with 6000k emitters, as there is no 4000k version of those LEDs made by Osram, so it isn't possible to build a 4000k Max. Both the yellow and white versions use the same 6000k emitters, meaning that the selective yellow optic needs to be a little darker than the Sport and Pros to correct for the higher color temp, so the darker yellow optic will be unique to the Max.

Which setup would you run on your personal vehicle given this info? Clear lens for max output since it's max after all or selective yellow at reduced intensity b/c it's already so awesome and yellow is so much more fun?

I didn’t realize that they were both 6000k emitters Dave! Whichever you decide I’ll make you square! I say go yellow, because yellow fogs on a minivan will be awesome.
