That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

OP is now trying to use spiders silk as a rope, it's winter time almost, no spiders out now.... so, it's all a no go.

I feel like this post was just an opportunity to tout someones engineering prowess. Buy the freaking winch you want and shut up.

Nah, an engineer would understand why its a dumb idea.

Every single engineer I've met in my life would agree with the creedo "it isn't engineered unless it's overengineered."

If this thread were started by an engineer it would have gone with the completely opposite thesis statement: that anything less than 15000 pound winch, plus mechanical advantage, is pointless and stupid.

If your winch can't snatch an Abrams tank then go home you poser.

    FIFY. :)

Based on a lot of products I've installed, not all engineers are great at thinking about real world applications.

If they could spend a week with a mechanic they would understand why what looks good on the computer screen wasn't a good choice to place something somewhere too.

Yeah, it varies. You'd be surprised how often engineers get overruled in the name of $reasons.

"Save a few hundred on your winch so you can spend a few hundred on snatch blocks and tree savers, while reducing your speed and winchable distance down to 25%" Makes sense to me.

    Yup!

This, too. I can usually tell whether it's about saving money, or just overthinking. There's no shortage of either in the products I install.

    LOL!

My favorite engineer story: I asked our company engineer to go over my designs for a simple piece of field equipment - basically a 3' x 12" trough to preserve rock cores in a dry ice bath. We haggled back and forth about material choice, expected service life, and how many jobs it would take for the equipment to pay for itself. He kept shooting down anything thinner or weaker than his choice of 1/4" stainless. That was always his 2nd favorite material of choice. (His favorite was 1/2" plate.) Any given piece of equipment in our lab could singlehandedly repel the Normandy invasion, which is awesome as long as you aren't asking for portability. I asked how much my trough would weigh. "we can get the weight down to 250 pounds or so depending on ice and sample." A typical field job would call for one person loading 15 of these containers into a pickup by hand (and that person was usually me).

Yeah, those boxes never made it past the blueprint stage for some reason.

Still, I learned a lot from that guy. He collected and restored antique lathes as a hobby. He was a cool dude.

I'd love to see his shop at home. A 1/2" plate toolbox would be wicked. We built a box out of that stuff for a radiation detector once...made a great doorstop when the project got shelved.

OP makes claim in post 1 and defends it like no other. Promises a video proving it works like 10 weeks ago and radio silence since. Won't come back in here.
