you're correct. the lock is definitely easily pickable by a determined thief. and that chain is also easily cuttable...by a determined thief. It's all about deterrence.

 

Since we're on the subject.... what DO you guys recommend for Chain/locks? I'm considering a cable to lock our bikes together, while in transport.(in the bed of the truck)

the chain that guy made would be better than a cable lock. those cable locks can be cut with snips. when i worked at a bike shop it wasnt uncommon for us to cut those wrapped around a top tube or something (cable lock wasnt actually locked to anything, just put there for storage and they lost the key).

theres no real way to stop a thief tbh. if you can get a shell over the cab and put everything in that it would be more safe. i have a friend that had a setup like that on a different truck. parked somewhere for a ride. someone broke into the shell, went through the rear window and stole stuff from the cab. his riding partner had her purse stolen with her keys and home address. was not a fun situation.

Pewag chain, Viro lock (Panzer or better) in combo with a Kryptonite and 2 cable locks. Plus an alarm lock on a cable. Messing with easy looking locks sets alarm off.

Beyond that, you can only hope to slow them down if someone gives a fart is within earshot.

 

Also, chain or cable is only as strong as your weakest link. I have a very stout hardened steel chain for my Dirtbike. I have nothing that would match that chain to anchor it to. Can only make something look less appealing to a determined thief. Just be proactive with everything.

 

We had discussions on this a while back. I ended up getting a 12mm Schlage security chain. I'm also planning to install a ground anchor to the bed of my truck (probably to the side with a steel backing plate) and lock it all up with one of the NY Kryptonite locks or similar. My plan was enough security to stop the average slightly motivated thief that might have some bolt cutters or a hack saw while I'm in for drinks or something.

 

I was toying with ideas for a slide out in the back seat of the truck and actually have the bike locked up in the truck. Right now that problem is that I want to take out the passenger seat instead and put a sleeping platform there. TBD, I have some ideas brewing in my head, we'll see how it works. Might not fit a Tacoma, unfortunately.

But the thought was to do this with a bed sleeper or rooftop tent. Now I'm leaning toward cab sleeping, so it'll be an interesting game of tetris! fortunately, it's either the bike or the dog, I likely will never have both in the truck for a trip.

 

I'd imagine the weak link is always going to be the tie down location in the truck bed? If a thieve has a T-30 or whatever they can just unscrew the mounting locations. Or cut through those mounting spots themselves? Idk... I'm not gonna leave my bike out of sight for more than a restroom break...

I'd be looking for a cable, almost 1" in diameter. It would need to fit in the bed tie down,(see image quoted below). Not a fan if Shells.

^^ exactly this. I have padlocks on the fork mounts, however I'd like a cable lock to secure them together, as well as their (removed) front wheel. Fitting through that tie down is the hurdle. I don't plan to ever have them out of site for more that a few minutes, store runs/ restroom breaks as mentioned.

Gotta admit... didn't browse this thread prior to purchasing the Taco.

 

Cable lock through the receiver hitch chain holes is what I lock my bikes and kayaks to......no trusty any plastic bed mounted loops, bed cleats or d-ring bolts that can be undone. Short of that loop a cable lock through 2 holes in the bed floor and under a frame rail but who wants to do that?

 

I actually thought of that. But with Pewag chain.

In June when the weather turns I'm going to install some flush HD tie downs mounted to the frame. The D rings are fairly massive. Of course I will need to cut the polymer bed, so I am still contemplating it. Also like any security measure, it will be layered.

 

Meh, a thief who wants the bike won't care if it's looped around the hitch or a cock ring. The bed floor is enough for me, if they're so determined that the mount to the plastic bed will be compromised, they're going to get through the steel/aluminum bed mount too. Most likely, by just cutting the cord/chain/cable/whatever.

 

Can I throw an XD driver on it?
